In my lab at Iowa State University, I maintain year-round, reproducing cultures of numerous living freshwater invertebrates. Teachers and students are welcome to visit my lab and I am happy to share tips for culturing invertebrates. I am also happy to provide, free-of-charge, living specimens for teachers to start their own culture and/or use in their biology classes (take- home containers and samples of critter food are included, as well).

I have large cultures of the following freshwater organisms:

Blackworms (Lumbriculus variegatus (freshwater oligochaetes) Ramshorn pond snail (Helisoma trivolvis - albino strain) Mixed cladoceran (daphnid) species Freshwater limpets (Ferrisia sp.) Leeches [family Erpobdellidae] (excellent predator on Lumbriculus) Freshwater isopods (Asellus aquaticus) Ostracods Hydra sp. Micro-oligochaetes (several species from family Naididae) Vinegar eels (nematodes)

ALSO ON HAND: fingernail clams, planaria, physid snails, Gyraullus snails, snail-eating leeches, amphipods, copepods, Artemia and more.
