A guide to the curriculum for Parents/Carers of children in Year 3 Second half of Summer Term 2017 Water For Summer Term 2, our topic is based on the Arts and specifically focused on ‘Water.’ During the topic we will be thinking about wishing tales, creating 3D marine animals, habitats and water poetry. We have a very busy half term to end the year, please take note of the dates at the bottom of this guide!

While thinking about ‘Water’ we will be exploring a range of text types including poetry, tales, and fact files. English Our guided reading sessions will focus on a mix of phonics, fiction and non-fiction; we will be further exploring different types of fiction stories.

In 3CF and 3JW we will be continue to be visiting the school library. NB the change of day for both classes: 3CF now visit on a Monday and 3JW on a Thursday.

Spelling and phonics sessions will continue to be taught regularly; the children will receive their spelling focus every Monday. The spelling rule will be taught and explored throughout the week and the children will be tested on a set of words the following Monday.

Mathematics In mathematics we will revise all four operations, moving on to more formal methods for each. We will also revisit measurement to consolidate our knowledge.

The Times Table Challenge will take place regularly – please support your child in practicing their times tables at home to keep progressing through the challenges.

Science To support our Arts topic, we will be exploring plants – what they need to live and grow, identifying different parts and functions of them, how water is transported through plants and the lifecycle of a plant.

Computing During this half term, we will support the Arts topic by using computers and other electronic devices to compose and play music. The children will explore how to create and edit their own compositions. Spanish We will be learning how to give our opinions on different sports. We will continue to look at grapheme and phoneme recognition and try to write en español from memory. We will also be using New Languagenut where you can search by topic for your words. If you need to be reminded of your logon access or password for this do not hesitate to contact me or the class teacher.

Physical Education This half term the focus in Physical Education sessions will be health and fitness. The children will have the opportunity to apply their skills through co-operative and competitive games. The two main areas for our fundamental movement skills development will be static balance focusing on small base balancing and agility focusing on ball chasing.

The theme for the half term will be ‘Climbing Sequences’. The skills focus for the half term will be ‘travel and balance using apparatus’. The children will be working on performing simple sequences with control and linking movements with quality.

PSHE&C Our theme for PSHE this half term is ‘Changing Me’, where we will focus on how babies grow, outside body changes, inside body changes, family stereotypes and looking ahead. We will explore the changes that happen by growing from a baby to an adult and why, and begin to understand and recognize stereotypical ideas about parenting and family roles. We will also think about what the children are looking forward to in Year 4.

RE The focus this half term will continue to be the question ‘Why do religious books and teachings matter?’ We will be exploring different religious writings and how believers take meaning from them, as well as leading on to looking at how pupils can express their own beliefs.
