2008-2009 Pictorial History Book Advisory Committee Report

2008-2009 PICTORIAL HISTORY BOOK ADVISORY COMMITTEE REPORT Submitted by Mary Brannan

Committee Members: Mary Brannan (Chair), Steve Brannan, Clarence Hein, Kathryn Kirkland, Roger Moseley, Richard Sanders, Brent Schauer, Pat Squire, Charles White

. During the year, Richard Sanders (author), Brent Schauer (photo editor), Charlie White, and Clarence Hein continued the writing and editing of the text and procuring and selecting photos. Clara Settle, the book designer who completed her master’s degree in the PSU Publication Program, worked on the book through July, 2008 when she left the area to pursue her career. Pamela Ivey, a Publishing Curriculum master’s degree student, developed the index. The final proofing was ably completed by Dawn White. We hired Abbey Gaterud, MS, adjunct faculty of the Publishing Curriculum, to compile the book and to serve as our liaison with the printer, C & C Offset Printing based in China. They were assisted in the final editing stages by Steve Brannan and Mary Brannan, with Dennis Stovall, Director of Ooligan Press, providing technical assistance and advice. We sent the book off for printing in February, 2009. After revisions of the proofs, the PSU pictorial history book, Portland State: A History in Pictures, was printed and 3069 books were received for distribution in April, 2009. Sadly, Richard Sanders died in February, 2009.

We co-sponsored a “Book Launch” with the PSU Library and the Alumni Association. It was a festive celebration with President Wiewel among the speakers. The PSU Bookstore sold some books at the event. Thanks to Doug Swanson for designing the invitation.

A subcommittee has developed the beginnings of a marketing plan that will be expanded during this upcoming year. The cost of a single copy of the book is $34.95. Currently, the book is being distributed (sold) by RAPS, the PSU Bookstore, Oregon Historical Society, and Annie Bloom’s. Arrangements have been made with Smith Memorial Student Union’s Market Place to start carring the book summer term, 2009. For their monetary contributions, books were/will be given to the President’s Office, Alumni Association, and the Library. Thanks to MiMi for setting up an invoicing system and a spreadsheet to track the distribution of the books. The books are stored in a secure storage area on the PSU campus.

RECOMMENDATION:

1. More fully develop a marketing plan.

2. Continue tracking the inventory.

3. Continue managing the PSU Foundation pictorial history book account.
