2-2-2010 CLAS 33 History of Rome Guideline for the 1st QUIZ

The goal of the quiz is to test if you have followed and understood the main points of the lectures and of the assigned readings.

The quiz will consist of 3 short IDs about people, topics or dates: simple questions calling for SHORT and to-the-point responses.

Examples: 1. people Servius Tullius GOOD ID: 6th king of Rome, ruled in the middle of the 6th cent. (I do not care for the exact dates). Important for his reforms of the Roman tribes and of the army, which mixed the different people of Rome into one, and for building the temple of Diana, which placed Rome in the cultural context of many neighbor people. 2. Topics patriapotestas GOOD ID: the supreme power recognized by law to the paterfamilias over all his property, including wife, children, slaves, cattle and tools. He was allowed to sell into slavery and even to kill his children; such power, which exemplifies the Roman mentality of duty and group identity, shaped Rome’s social structure (e.g. patres = senators; patricii = sons of the patres; patron = protector) and political institutions (e.g. the supreme power of the consuls and of the senators, the patres conscripti).
