Philosophy: The purpose of this course is to prepare students for advance studies in science and to equip the students with the necessary tools to participate in the AP Chemistry program at Chariho. This course covers a number of objectives which include; basic tools (Ch. 1-3), structure of atoms and molecules (Ch. 4-6), interaction of matter (Ch. 7-9), chemical reactions and equations (Ch. 10-11), Stoichiometry (Ch. 12), states of matter (Ch. 13-14), water and aqueous systems (Ch. 15-16), kinetics and thermodynamics (Ch. 17-18), acids and bases (Ch. 19), and oxidation and reduction reactions (Ch. 20). The student will be evaluated for cognitive achievement through a variety of assessments. The variety of evaluation styles is intended to strengthen points of weaknesses and to reinforce areas of confidence. The intention of this class is to produce students who can properly develop critical thinking skills, evaluate problems, and create planning dynamics to properly evaluate issues central to chemistry.

Grading: It is very important to know that the MCA is worth 33% of the grade and will be administered at the end of each quarter. The MCA can greatly affect a student’s grade at the end of the quarter! This class will adhere to the late work policy of the school.

a. Tests and Quizzes: 25% b. Labs: 15% c. Homework: 10% d. Participation: 7% e. Journal: 10% f. MCA: 33%

Class Rules: The school provides students with a handbook that serves to explain the conduct and attendance expectations of Chariho Students. The handbook can also be used to organize their assignments. It is the intention of this class to follow the school’s mission statement and student expectations in words, deeds, actions, and thoughts. Two essential objectives central to the success of a productive learning environment are the practice of concepts learned and the importance of asking questions when concepts are difficult. The safety contract must be signed and returned before participation in any lab activity.

Help Night: Help night is held every Wednesday after school.  …………………………………………………………………………….CUT AND RETURN……………………………………………………….
