Easy-to-see radio controlled watch CW189 & CW190

Please retain these instructions for future reference. These instructions are also available in other formats. General description This easy-to-see watch sets the time automatically via a radio signal and has large, bold hands and numbers, which colour contrast with the watch face, making it easier to tell the time. The radio signal feature also sets the time when the clocks change in spring and autumn. Available with a large (CW189) or small (CW190) face it has a black leather strap, and is water resistant to 30m (3atm), meaning that it is only splash proof.

The UK radio transmitter is based in Anthorn, Cumbria, and typically has a reaching distance of up to 620 miles or 1000 kilometres. In countries with no signal the watch time can be set manually.

Abbreviation meanings The following abbreviations are used within these instructions. Here are the meanings:

RCC stands for Radio Controlled.

DST (printed on the edge of the watch face at the 5 o'clock position) stands for Daylight Saving Time.

OK (printed on the edge of the watch face at the 12 o'clock position) stands for Successful Synchronisation (received a successful signal).

RNIB charity numbers 226227, SC039316 and 1109 NG (printed on the edge of the watch face at the 6 o'clock position) stands for Unsuccessful synchronisation (not received a successful signal).

SYNC stands for Synchronise.

Orientation With the front of the watch facing towards you (the buckle part of the strap should be furthest away from you) you will notice the following buttons around the watch face:

Button A: Raised button at the 2 o'clock position. This is used to check the RCC, DST status and to synchronise the second hand.

Crown/winder: At the 3 o'clock position.

Button B: Raised button at the 4 o'clock position. This is used to synchronise the second hand.

Button C: Recessed button at the 10 o'clock position. This is used to SYNC for the accurate time and for calibration of the RCC.

Button D: Recessed button at the 8 o'clock position. This button is used for Forced synchronization and halt synchronization. Please note: it is NOT used by the consumer but only for a factory/repair reset. Getting started Initial activation Your watch will need activating before using (all hands point at 12 o'clock position) as it will initially have the crown pulled out with a plastic tab in place to save battery life. To activate it, simply pull out the plastic tab and press the crown back to its normal position and then press the recessed button at the 10 o'clock position with a pen tip to SYNC for the accurate time. If the radio signal

rnib.org.uk reception is normal the watch will take three to five minutes to update the time automatically. If however, the radio signal reception is bad then sometimes it can take overnight to update. Using the product Radio controlled function The following sections highlight what you can do if your watch is not receiving a radio signal and is therefore not keeping accurate time.

Checking for RCC status To check whether the watch has successfully received a radio signal, press button A (2 o'clock) once. The second hand will then move to one of the two following points:

1. OK - 12 o'clock if signal is successful. 2. NG - 6 o'clock if signal is unsuccessful.

Your watch will not lose any time if a signal reception was unsuccessful, and the signal will be at its strongest in the early hours of the morning, so it is recommended to leave the watch by a window at this time if you need the watch to receive a radio signal.

Checking for DST status To check whether the watch is set to DST, press button A (2 o'clock) twice. The second hand will then move to 5 o'clock if the watch is set to DST. If set to standard time, the second hand will move to the 12 o'clock position.

Watch hand calibration for RCC function Please note: Only calibrate the watch hands after changing the battery or when the watch is not setting correctly.

To reset the hands to zero (12 o'clock) position, please follow the steps below:

rnib.org.uk 1. Pull out the crown when the second hand reaches the 12 o'clock position.

2. Turn the crown to set the hour and minute hands to 12 o'clock position.

3. Push back the crown to the normal position.

4. Press the recessed button at the 10 o'clock position to start SYNC for the accurate time. If the radio signal reception is normal the watch will take three to five minutes to set the time automatically. If however, the radio signal reception is bad then sometimes it can take overnight to update.

Quick calibration for second hands This watch is a very delicate and precise instrument. Although uncommon, sometimes hard knocks or vibrations can cause the hands to move irregularly, and therefore display the incorrect time. You may notice this if when you press button A (2 o'clock). If the second hand does not point directly at OK (12 o'clock) or NG (6 o'clock), this means the second hand is off. To rectify this, please follow the steps below:

1. Press the recessed button at the 10 o'clock position and the second hand will move to the 12 o'clock position.

2. If the second hand does not point directly at the 12 o'clock, you can press the button at the 2 o'clock position to move the second hand forward or press the button at the 4 o'clock position so that the second hand goes backwards. In order to reset/calibrate the second hand to the 12 o'clock position, press either the 2 or 4 o'clock button 20 seconds after starting this process.

3. After the second hand has been calibrated, the watch will start SYNC for the accurate time.

rnib.org.uk Manual time setting If your location cannot receive a radio controlled signal (outside of the UK and out of range of the radio signal), you can simply pull out the crown, move hands to your local time and press back the crown. The RCC function of the watch will be eliminated. To start the RCC function, please follow the Watch hand calibration for RCC function section. Battery replacement We recommend that you to take this watch to a local jeweller for a battery replacement.

The large watch (CW189) uses 1x CR2016 battery. This battery can be purchased from RNIB under product code CP07.

The small watch (CW190) uses 1x CR1620 battery. This battery can be purchased from RNIB under product code CP12.

Auto-synchronisation Once batteries are installed and the watch hands are calibrated for the radio controlled function, the receiver circuit is activated. The second hand will point at the 12 o'clock position and all hands will stop running.

If the watch is too close to electrical appliances such as a TV, mobile phone and computer, they may cause undesirable signal interference. A strong signal is normally found close to the window. In some areas where the signal is poor, you may need to position the watch face down close to the window.

It normally takes three to five minutes to synchronise. Once it is successful, the watch will show accurate time. Successful

rnib.org.uk synchronisation is symbolized by pressing the button A at the 2 o'clock position once and the second hand points at OK (12 o'clock). If it points at NG (6 o'clock) it means it has not received a successful signal. After the watch starts running within 24 hours, it will synchronise every two hours. After 24 hours, it will synchronize at 2.00am every day.
