JOB DESCRIPTION FOR Building and Grounds Maintenance

The position of Janitorial Services and Building Maintenance may be offered as individual positions or as one position, depending on the needs of the library and the qualifications and abilities of the person(s) applying for the position. This position reports to the Director of Barclay Public Library. Worker is expected to be knowledgeable of company policies established for all employees of Barclay Public Library.

Janitorial and Interior Building Maintenance duties must be performed outside the library’s hours of operation. Cleaning and maintenance duties should not be performed when customers are in the building.

Exterior Building Maintenance duties can be performed at any time that does not interfere with library operations or customer’s access to the facility.

The library’s needs include the following skills:

 Experience in interior and exterior maintenance including: mowing, trimming, weeding, snow removal, janitorial and handyman services.  Ability to read and follow complex directions  Ability to work without continuous direct supervision  Ability to work outdoors under unfavorable weather conditions (ie. hot or cold)  Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds  Ability to stand, bend, stoop, lift, stretch, climb, balance, kneel, crouch and crawl  Must be able to establish and maintain a cordial work climate, with a sincere interest in the overall mission of the library  Must maintain discretion and confidentiality when necessary.  Must be able to identify critical problems and take charge to solve problems.

2/2011 Janitorial Service

Twice weekly – once on the weekend and once in the middle of the week

1. Dust/wash as needed – tables, counter tops, desk tops, circulation counter and fax machine/typing counter

2. Clean drinking fountain, all restroom toilets, sinks and countertops, diaper changing stations and mirrors. Cleans walls and stall doors as needed. Replace paper towels, toilet tissue in anticipation of need over the next few days.

3. Clean floor surfaces – vacuum, sweep or mop – all entry areas, carpeted and hard floors, including offices and hallways as needed

4. Empty all trashcans, place waste in garbage can outside west door.

Once a week

1. Wet mop all tile floor areas.

2. Dust book case tops, bookshelves, book spines and tops – do a different area each week rotating through the entire building.

3. Spot clean carpet as needed

4. Put recycling out

Additional duties, as assigned, may include: 1. Spot clean upholstered chairs as needed/noted

2. Thoroughly clean offices four times a year – dusting shelving, countertops, etc. – we will try to move as much stuff out of the way as possible and leave a note for you when it is to be done.

2/2011 Building Maintenance

Interior Building Maintenance 1. Make a visual inspection for light bulbs or fluorescent tubes – indoors and out – that need replacing, and replace them, disposing of the used bulbs or tubes. Replace ballasts in fluorescent fixtures as needed.

2. Perform minor maintenance or repairs on toilets, sinks, etc. as needed.

3. Change all furnace filters quarterly.

4. Shop for cleaning supplies, building supplies and/or equipment as allowed by the library’s annual budget.

Exterior Building and Grounds Maintenance

1. Mow and trim all grass areas of library property as needed to keep up a neat appearance. Sweep grass off walks and patio after mowing.

2. Weed in landscaped areas as needed during growing season.

3. Trim bushes seasonally as needed or instructed.

4. Collect leaves in fall/spring as needed and dispose of in approved manner.

5. Clean leaves out of gutters in fall and spring.

6. Shovel snow from walkways leading to building from both parking lots before 9:00 AM Monday through Saturday, or as soon as possible after snowfall ends if library is open. Cover walkways with ice-melt as needed.

Additional duties, as assigned, may include: 1. Painting walls, doors, trim etc.

3. Any other assigned tasks not herein defined but necessary for the operation of the building.

Building Maintenance personnel will provide own equipment for yard work. The library provides all other equipment and supplies.
