French I 2016-2017

This class is a thorough introduction to the French language in its four different comprehension methods: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. There will be a grand amount of vocabulary and various grammatical concepts introduced. Many aspects of the Francophone world will be discussed as well including specific historical events, holidays, geography, and everyday cultural differences.

Expectations 1. Students will come to class on time, prepared with all necessary items for class; laptop, folder and notebook, pencils or pens. Our book is accessed through the web, so there is no book to carry. 2. Students will respect all school rules and expectations, especially with laptops and cell phones. 3. Students will come to class with a positive attitude each day.

Attendance Policy Today you will be given a number – love that number. On the wall you see a shoe hanger with numbers on each pocket. When you come in to class, you are to put your cell phone in that numbered pocket. Mine will be in number 15, unless it is charging. Make sure it is quiet FIRST. DO NOT ASK ME TO GET UP AND CHECK YOUR PHONE. No, YOU MAY NOT CHARGE YOUR PHONE DURING CLASS. If your phone is not in the pocket by the start of class – you will receive a detention for ANY AND ALL INTERACTION BETWEEN YOUR PHONE AND YOUR BODY DURING MY CLASS. PLEASE DO NOT ARGUE WITH ME ON THIS. Once we have completed the class and all we have to accomplish, I will let you know when you may retrieve your phones.

Assignments and Studying There is always homework … STUDY and REVIEW your vocabulary and grammar. The more preparation and studying done outside of class, the more successful you will be in class. There will often be written assignments inside during class and outside of class, but you are always expected to be reviewing on your own. Please do not hesitate to ask questions. We are working towards a comprehension of the language in four different ways: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The more consistent practice the better. I am here to help you, just ask. If you need extra help outside of class time, it can be arranged.

Homework Policy Homework is assigned often. It will not be very much, but it is practice to be done independently to show me you understand and can do the work on your own. Homework will be collected, graded FOR CORRECTNESS, and returned in a timely manner. If homework is due and I do not receive anything from you – a 0 will go in the grade-book automatically. Once you give it to me and I grade it, your grade will reflect that - AN AUTOMATIC THREE POINTS WILL BE TAKEN FOR LATENESS. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO TURN IN WORK AFTER A DUE DATE. I WILL NOT ASK FOR IT. If you have been legally absent from class, the assignment is expected upon your return. A music lesson or sport event is not a legal absence – it is the student’s responsibility to turn in work that is due. From there, any new assignments will be given and a due date will be decided between the student and the instructor.

Grades Grades will be updated numerous times per week and able to be accessed through the website. My class is not weighted. Assignments will be posted on my website as assigned. All assignments will be collected, graded, and returned within a timely manner. A marking period grade will be made up of such items as:  Homework assignments  Classwork assignments  Bell Ringers and TOD’s  Speaking assignments  POP Quizzes – vocabulary/grammatical concepts – THESE WILL NOT BE ANNOUNCED.  Quizzes and Tests  Projects  Midterm and Final Exam Please do not friend me on Facebook. I will not friend you until after you have graduated. Same with Twitter and Instagram. I look forward to supporting you in your academic and athletic careers and please let me know if I can help you in any way. I will often write about my achievements as a classroom teacher or as a parent on my personal blog or for my blog through The Huffington Post, but be assured no one’s name is ever mentioned.

BONUS opportunities

Every day there will be a “DO NOW” task on the board. Please come in, deposit your phone, and complete this task. These tasks can be completed on the sheet of paper I give you. At the end of the week I will collect these papers from you and grade a certain amount of questions, 3-5 questions, for correctness. I will choose a certain amount of questions to check each week. I will correct these questions and you will earn BONUS points. These points can only help your grade not hurt your grade.
