To Learn About the Big Bang Theory and Other Theories of the Formation of the Universe

10Science work Friday June 6 th 2014

E.L.  To learn about the Big Bang theory and other theories of the formation of the universe  To work on sifting through large amounts of information to find information that is both accurate and useful!

PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE DOCUMENT BEFORE STARTING WORK SO YOU KNOW WHAT NEEDS TO BE COMPLETED. THERE ARE TWO TASKS TO DO, THERE ARE TWO OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM FOR TASK 1 AND THREE OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM FOR TASK 2.

Tasks for lesson:

Task 1 Research and write  Aiming for Level 9 o Research the Big Bang Theory and the Solid State Theory o List the features of the Big Bang Theory in dot points o List the features of the Solid State Theory in dot points  Aiming for Level 10 o List as many theories as you can for the formation of the Universe and give a brief description of each (one sentence) o Research the Big Bang Theory and the Solid State Theory o List the features of the Big Bang Theory in dot points o List evidence that supports the Big Bang Theory o List the features of the Solid State Theory in dot points

 Resources for the above: o Lots of internet searching, here is one resource: http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/space/universe/questions_and _ideas/steady_state_theory o In case the internet is bad I have saved a bunch of resources into the student public folder. I have given an indication of their usefulness by numbering them and giving them a descriptor. E.g. ‘1. Nice and simple – Big Bang theory’

Task 2 Getting creative with your knowledge  Option 1- Basic task (Level 4/5) Make a new meme like the one below but more scientifically accurate, to do with the creation of the universe. o (If you do this you should have a go at the next task as well)  Option 2- Slightly harder (Level 6/7) Check the accuracy of the Big Bang Theory theme song lyrics! Write a summary of whether the information provided is accurate or not, supporting or rejecting the vague timeline suggested through the song.

Lyrics for Big Bang Theory: Our whole universe was in a hot dense state, Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started —Wait... The Earth began to cool; The autotrophs began to drool; Neanderthals developed tools; We built a wall (we built the pyramids). Math, science, history, unraveling the mystery, That all started with a Big Bang! Bᴀɴɢ! "Since the dawn of man" is really not that long, As every galaxy was formed in less time than it takes to sing this song. A fraction of a second and the elements were made. The bipeds stood up straight, The dinosaurs all met their fate, They tried to leave, but they were late And they all died. (They froze their asses off.) The oceans and Pangea, See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya, Set in motion by the same Big Bang! It all started with the Big Bang! It's expanding ever outward, but one day, It will pause and start to go the other way, Collapsing ever inward, we won't be here, it won't be heard. Our best and brightest figure that it'll make an even bigger bang! Australopithecus would really have been sick of us Debating how we're here, they're catching deer. (We're catching viruses.) Religion and astronomy, Descartes and Deuteronomy, It all started with the Big Bang!

 Option 3- Level 9-10 (depending on content included) Create your own infographic like the one below using the information you found on the theories of the universe in Task 1. Try and combine different theories of the universe into one infographic document.

(You can do this on computer or using whatever program you wish. If you want to do it on paper and you have art supplies go ahead. Alternatively you can ask for permission to go to your locker and get your art supplies, or try asking someone to get you some from the science cupboard.)
