Scoring for the College Hemingway: Measure of Late Adolescent Connectedness (version 4)

Below are the items which go with each scale. Those bolded must be reverse scored before creating mean scores for the separate subscales. Reverse scoring means changing 1 to 5, 2 to 4, 4 to 2, and 5 to 1. Then, taking the mean of the items in the scale creates the scale score.

Three sets of reliability estimates are reported below from earlier studies using the scale with college students in a traditionally Black college (BC), in a small liberal arts college (mostly Caucasian students)(LA), and in a large research university (mostly Caucasian students)(RU). These were based on small samples (75 to 100 youth in each study) but provide estimates of which scales to be most reliable. Some of the BC reliabilities were based on only a subset of items, and so may be artificially low or not available (n/a) for this group. Two-week test-retest (TR) reliability and unbiased test-retest reliability (UA) (Cronbach’s Alpha) estimates also are presented. Notice, that because the number of reverse-scored items vary among the subscales, it is not appropriate to make between subscale comparisons based on mean differences. Those with more reverse-scored items will have lower mean scores.

Reverse items: 7, 11, 21, 26, 30, 34, 51, 59, 64, 69, 70, 72.
