Rules for Creating a Works Cited Page

Rules for Creating a Works Cited Page -Using MLA format-

What is a Works Cited page? A Works Cited is a list of resources used in a research paper or written work that has citations.

Rules for creating a Works Cited page:

1. Works Cited page is written on a separate sheet of paper(s). 2. Works Cited is located at the end of a research paper or written work. 3. Works Cited format has a margin of one inch all around. 4. Works Cited title is in plain font (not bold, italics nor underlined). 5. Works Cited title is centered one inch from the top of the paper. 6. Entire format is double-spaced. 7. First line of each resource entry is flush with the one-inch left margin, and subsequent lines are indented one-half inch. 8. Requested information needs to be in the proper order as illustrated by the corresponding template. 9. Resources are listed in alphabetical order by the author’s or editor’s last name. 10. If there is no author or editor name, alphabetize by the first word of the article or publication (the next piece of information). Do NOT use the introductory adjective article (A, An, or The) to alphabetize. For example, The Research Handbook would be alphabetized under R rather than T. 11. Dates are written as day month year (no commas in between) with all months abbreviated except May, June and July. Month abbreviations are followed by a period (Aug. Sep. Oct.). 12. Titles are written in both upper and lower case. Capitalize the first word, last word, and all principal words in a title, including those that follow hyphens in compound terms. Do not capitalize articles (the, a, and an), prepositions (e.g. in, of, to, etc.), coordinating conjunctions (e.g. and, but, for, etc.), and the to in infinitives. 13. Titles of publications are italicized. Publications include books, plays, long poems, pamphlets, periodicals (magazines, newspapers, and journals), Web sites, online databases, films, radio and television programs, compact discs, audiocassettes, record albums, dance performances, operas, works of visual art, ships, aircraft, and spacecraft. 14. Titles of works published within larger works are in quotations. Examples include articles, essays, short stories, short poems, chapters of books, pages in Web sites, individual episodes of television and radio broadcasts, and songs, as well as unpublished works, such as lectures and speeches. 15. Titles of publications and articles should be complete, including any subtitles. If there is a subtitle, put a colon and a space directly after the main title, unless the main title ends in a question mark, an exclamation point, or a dash. 16. All punctuation needs to be in its correct place for each entry as illustrated by the corresponding template. 17. Each resource entry ends with a period. 18. If requested information cannot be found anywhere, cite what is available. 19. Words are NOT split and hyphenated at the ends of lines. The following is a sample Works Cited page.
