COLLEGE PREPARATION PACKET: Naviance log-on instructions. Look at ABOUT ME and review your PROFILE, TEST SCORES, and link to the COLLEGE SELF- EVALUATION. Look at CAREERS/Favorite Careers and Clusters. o If none has been identified, remember to complete the Career Interest Profiler and the process for completing a career search in Naviance. Look at COLLEGES/Colleges I’m Thinking About. o Explore colleges on the student’s list. o If none has been identified, complete a college search. o You should have 3-5 colleges on the list before returning in the fall. SAT/ACT websites and upcoming test and registration dates. o Review PSAT scores and discuss the appropriate test or tests for the student. o Remember to take a college admissions or Accuplacer test in spring Review the COLLEGE/SCHOLARSHIP SELF-EVALUATION FORM. o Have the 10 questions on the self-evaluation form in the ABOUT ME tab in Naviance before the end of the school year. SSL opportunities handout o All SSL hours should be completed before returning in the fall.
NEXT STEPS: Ask parents to call the counseling secretary in May to schedule college information meeting during the summer. Meet with Ms. Lanning in the College/Career center for help with SAT/ACT registration, Montgomery College registration, college searches, and scholarship searches. Attend College Fair on April 20, 2016 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. Registration information will be coming soon. 4 THINGS TO COMPLETE BEFORE THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR: 1. Take a college prep test if you are looking at 4-year colleges. 2. Complete the 10 questions of the College Self-Evaluation questionnaire in ABOUT ME in Naviance. 3. Add 3-5 colleges in Colleges I’m Thinking About in Naviance. 4. Complete resume in Naviance. SUMMER TASKS: 1. Continue to research colleges and create an organizational system 2. Visit Colleges of interest 3. Begin college applications (including common app) when they open on or about Aug. 1, 2016

1. Find the header “COLLEGES” and under the “COLLEGE RESEARCH” section complete:
1. “ College Search” – complete the search to see what colleges match your criteria – do not get too specific or too broad. 2. Save your search – after clicking on “view matches,” go to the top next to “Number of matches,” click on “save search,” name and save. 3. Explore colleges – click on the names of the colleges to learn about them.
4. “ College Match” – see what colleges Einstein students have been accepted to with the same criteria as you (SAT, ACT, and GPA)

It is important that you answer each question fully and completely. The more information you provide, the more complete your recommendation will be. Please complete in Naviance by June 1, 2016
1. Describe specific extracurricular activities (including jobs) in which you have participated (in the US or another country). Include positions held, leadership, service, sports, arts, etc. What role did you play and how were others influenced by you?
2. Describe your Student Service Learning activities. What did you learn about yourself and others?
3. Describe what you believe are your strengths. Describe awards/honors received, academic, athletic, etc.
4. What is one of your passions?
5. Tell about an important aspect of high school; a specific teacher, class, moment, something that describes how you feel about what you have learned (may be academy related or not).
6. What three qualities would you use to describe yourself and why? For example (but not limited to): hard working, persistent, good listener, patient.
7. Did your parents receive a diploma from a college in the United States?
8. What is your intended major? Why?
9. In reviewing your transcript (grades), is it a fair evaluation of you as a student? Why or why not? Is there anything you would like to explain to colleges in order for them to put your grades in appropriate context? 10. Tell about an event that has had an impact on your life, or tell about an obstacle you have overcome.
Earning SSL Hours at Einstein HS, Q&A
Use www.mcpsssl.org to answer all of your questions and find approved organizations
Q: How can I earn hours? A: Hours can be earned by: Completing specific course work School-sponsored clubs and organizations (including PTSA and Booster events)
Preapproved community organizations You can search for preapproved community organizations on the SSL website: www.mcpsssl.org. Sites that are approved for students have a graduation cap next to them.
Q: What can I do if I want to volunteer with a nonprofit organization that is not yet approved? A: You will need to complete the Individual Student Service Learning Request form; it must be signed by your parents and the supervisor of the organization BEFORE you start to volunteer. Forms are available on the SSL website or in the counseling office and must be turned in to Mrs. Keller BEFORE you start to work.
Q: What can I do at Einstein to earn SSL hours? A: There are lots of ways, here are a few suggestions: Talk to teachers or staff members; volunteer with them before or after school.
Join a club that does SSL activities. Examples include: Key Club, tutoring, Titan Readers, Best Buddies, Garden Club, theatre, etc. Volunteer when the PTSA or Booster Club asks for volunteers.

Q: Can I earn hours during the summer? A: Yes! Here are a couple of suggestions: Volunteer in a local elementary, middle or high school office (contact the school directly)
Work at a summer camp
o Contact MC Dept. of Recreation
o Visit www.montgomeryparks.org for opportunities in the parks
Volunteer at a MC Public Library
Q: Once I have earned my SSL hours, what should I do? A: Once SSL hours are complete, make sure you turn in the completed SSL Activity Verification form to the counseling office (in the bin marked SSL or in Mrs. Keller’s box on her door). Forms should be submitted after you complete each activity.
Q: What do I get out of completing SSL hours? A: You accomplish a lot: Completing SSL hours is a state requirement for graduation! Seniors that complete 260 SSl hours by the first Friday in April of their senior year, earn a certificate of meritorious service and a purple tassel for their graduation cap. LOTS of college scholarships are based on community service. It looks GREAT on your resume. You are helping your community; you should feel GREAT about that!
