Expectations:

 Students are expected to arrive to class prepared and on time

 Students are expected to be responsible

 Complete homework assignments

 Complete all make-up work

 Study for all exams/prepare for class

 Take notes

 Turn in ALL assignments on actual due date

 Students are expected to be respectful to teacher and classmates

 Students are expected to act maturely and work together

 Students are expected to accept and apply constructive criticism

Classroom Supplies:

 Supply of pens (black or blue ink only) and pencils

 Highlighter (any color)

 Loose-leaf paper

 1 ½-inch 3 ring binder with dividers

 Thesaurus (paperback)

 Post-it notes for annotating

Classroom Donations:

 Box of tissues (any size)  Paper towels

 Clorox wipes (to keep desk tops clean)

 Hand sanitizer

 Dry-erase markers

Novels you are responsible for purchasing:

 Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer (Summer Assignment)

 To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

 Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury

Grading:

 70% of your grade will be based on Major assignments (tests, written prompts/essays, major projects, major presentations, etc.).

 After grading the first few essays (quiz grades), I will begin scoring the essays on a scale from 1-9, as they are on the AP exam. Students will have roughly 4 scored essays per quarter. The 4 essays will be averaged into one major test grade.

 25% of your grade will be based on Minor assignments (quizzes-count as 2 minor grades, classwork, homework, etc.).

 5% of your grade will be based on classroom readiness and participation.

Textbook information:

 Each student will be issued a textbook. The student is responsible for bringing the textbook to class each day, unless informed otherwise. The textbook must be returned at the end of the school year.

Plagiarism:

 Plagiarism, the use of another’s ideas or words without properly crediting your source is unethical, academically dishonest, and illegal. It will not be tolerated in this class and will result in an automatic zero (0) on the applicable assignment. Due dates:

 Failure to meet assigned due dates will result in a letter grade deduction for each school day the assignment is late.

Parents and Students:

 Please understand that Pre-AP English is the most challenging English 9 course available at PHS. This course will require a lot of hard work and dedication.
