Course Description Honors Chemistry is a yearlong course dedicated to the study of the physical world and its composition. There is a lecture/class aspect and lab/experimental aspect to the class where we learn a concept and then either see it in action or test its application.I hope that by the end of this year you have a deeper understanding of the world around you! It will be a great year if we all stay safe in the lab and do our part to be prepared for the lessons.

Course Schedule First Quarter Third Quarter Ch1: Introduction to Chemistry Ch 8: Chemical Equations and Ch10: States of Matter (KMT) Reactions Ch 12: Solutions Ch 9: Stoichiometry Ch 2: Measurements and Calculations Ch 11: Gases Ch 3: Atoms: The Building Blocks of Ch 17: Reaction Kinetics Matter Ch 16: Reaction Energy Ch 4: Arrangement of Electrons in Atoms Ch 5: The Periodic Law Second Quarter Fourth Quarter Ch 6: Chemical Bonding Ch 12: Solutions Ch 7: Chemical Formulas and Ch 18: Chemical Equilibrium Chemical Compounds Ch19: Oxidation-Reduction Reactions Ch 22: Organic Chemistry Ch 14: Acids and Bases Ch 8:Chemical Equations and Ch 21: Nuclear Chemistry Reations Materials  3-ring binder with paper (articles, notes, quizzes, homework)  Composition Notebook for Warm-ups  Scientific Calculator (TI 30X-IIS suggested)  2 rolls of Paper Towels

Grading Quarter grades will be calculated based on total points accumulated throughout the quarter and will be distributed in the following percentages:

Tests – 50% Quizzes – 30% Labs – 15% Homework – 5%

Make-up Policy: Attendance is extremely important. If you are absent it is your responsibility to complete any missed work. You will have one day for every day absent to turn in work after an excused absence. Tests and quizzes will be made up before or after school. You must schedule a time with me to make-up tests or quizzes. There will be no late work accepted outside of excused absences.

Homework/Classwork: All work will be graded for correctness and completion. Each class will begin with a “warm-up” covering material from previous lessons that will be turned in at the end of each quarter for an additional quiz grade.

Labs: All labs will be completed for the week and will be due the following Monday.

Science Articles: Each quarter you will read 6 current science news articles from a reliable news publication. The following criteria must be included:  Publication the article was taken from  Comprehensive summary of the article The articles will be collected each quarter for an additional quiz grade. More details on this assignment will be given in class.

Chemistry Help: The Chemistry teachers offer free tutoring before and after school.
