Course Description

Students will explore the world of science by using the basic skills of observing, measuring, calculating, classifying, predicting, inferring, graphing, creating data tables, and communicating. Students will also utilize these basic skills to learn how to pose questions, form operational definitions, develop hypotheses, control variables, interpret data and graphs, make models, draw conclusions, and design experiments. The purpose of this course is to provide opportunities to study several fields of science, with a special emphasis on the nature of science and scientific inquiry, argumentation, proper use of units, and measurement.

Pencils Pens Large eraser Composition Book Calculator Colored pencils Hand pencil sharpener with cover Glue stick Pencil case to hold items above 3-ring binder with lined notebook and graph paper Expo marker labeled with student name (kept in classroom) Sock to use as eraser for white board, also labeled and kept in class

Class Expectations 1. Enter class on time and prepared to learn 2. Remain seated unless permission is granted to get up 3. Keep food, drinks, gum, and hats/hoods out of the classroom 4. Talk with a soft voice 5. Dismissal is by the teacher, not the bell

Procedures

Students will immediately begin work on the “Bellringer” on the board. Pencils must be sharpened before or after, not during, teacher instruction. Work must be kept in the class folder or handed in the first period basket as instructed. Assignments/homework for the week must be copied in the agenda book on Monday. The website may be used to copy from if the student is absent. Textbooks are to be kept in the classroom, but may be accessed online. Tardies; Students should be in their seat when the bell rings. One tardy: verbal warning; two tardies: conference with teacher; three tardies: call home Makeup work: This is the student’s responsibility. Student worksheets are in the pocket on the door. One day is given for each day missed. Late work has a maximum of 90 for one day late, 80 for two, 70 for three, and 60 for four. Tests must be made up the day of return.
