PROFORMA FOR REGISTRATION OF SUBJECT FOR DISSERTATION 1. Name of Candidate DR. MOHD ABDUL MOIZ H. NO. 2-203 JAGATH NEAR EK KHANA Permanent Address MASJID , GULBARGA- 585105 H.K.E. SOCIETY’S S. NIJALINGAPPA INSTITUTE OF DENTAL SCIENCES AND 2. Name of the Institution RESEARCH, GULBARGA, KARNATAKA. MASTER OF DENTAL SURGERY – 3. Course of study and subjects ORTHODONTICS AND DENTOFACIAL ORTHOPEDICS 4. Date of admission to the course 31st MAY 2011 A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF PREDICTION 5. Title of Topic EQUATION IN THE MIXED DENTITION FOR SOUTH INDIAN POPULATION. 6. Brief Resume of Intended work 6.1 NEED FOR THE STUDY :-

An important aspect of diagnosis in the mixed dentition is determination of the relationship of tooth size to arch length. It is often necessary to make such a determination before eruption of the permanent canines and first and second premolars.1

As the prediction tables and equations given by Moyers and Tanaka Johnston were developed for white North American children, their applicability in other populations is questionable because tooth sizes differ in various racial groups.2 Evidence of racial tooth size variability suggests that prediction techniques based on one racial sample might not be universal.3 Therefore, in this study, we aimed to

1. Measure the mesiodistal crown diameters of the mandibular incisors, canines, and premolars and study their relationships; 2. See any sex dimorphism of the above; 3. Construct prediction tables and equations for South Indian children; and 4. Check the reliability of both the Moyers4 and the Tanaka and Johnston5 methods in the South Indian children.

6.2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE

1) F. S. Ferguson et al (1978)6 They conducted a study to present the coefficients of correlation between the combined mesiodistal width of the permanent mandibular incisors ,canine and premolars of a maxillary or mandibular quadrant in a sample of Negro Americans and regression coefficients are used to develop a table for prediction of the mesiodistal width of the canine and premolars from that of the mandibular incisors. And they found that the correlation between the total mesiodistal width of the mandibular permanent incisors and that of the maxillary or mandibular canine and premolars was found to be 0.63 and 0.71, respectively.

2)Samir E. Bishara et al (1989)7 They conducted a study to examine the mesiodistal and buccolingual crown dimensions in three populations-57 subjects from Iowa City, Iowa; 54 subjects from Alexandria, Egypt; and 60 subjects from Chihuahua, Mexico. And they concluded that prediction equations used for space analysis in the mixed dentition to determine tooth size-arch length discrepancies in the lowa population can also be used for persons from Egypt and from the northern part of the Mexican Republic, with some modifications.
