After completing her education at Spelman College and Yale 28 Law School, she became the first black woman admitted to the 29 Mississippi Bar and directed the NAACP Legal Defense and 30 Educational Fund office in Jackson, Mississippi. In l968, she 31 moved to Washington, D.C., as counsel for the Poor People’s 32 Campaign that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., began organizing 33 before his death; and 34 35 Whereas, under her leadership for the last forty years, the 36 Children’s Defense Fund has become the nation’s strongest voice 37 for children and families. The Children’s Defense Fund’s Leave 38 No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy 39 Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in 40 life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring 41 families and communities; and 42

[5069] 2 1 Whereas, Mrs. Edelman has received over a hundred honorary 2 degrees and many awards, including the Albert Schweitzer 3 Humanitarian Prize, the Heinz Award, a MacArthur Foundation 4 Prize Fellowship, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the 5 Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Award for her many 6 writings, which include Families in Peril: An Agenda for Social 7 Change; The Measure of Our Success: A Letter to My Children 8 and Yours; Lanterns: A Memoir of Mentors; and I’m Your Child, 9 God: Prayers for Our Children; and 10 11 Whereas, a board member of the Robin Hood Foundation and the 12 Association to Benefit Children, she is also a member of the 13 Council on Foreign Relations, the American Philosophical Society, 14 and other organizations; and 15 16 Whereas, further recognitions await Mrs. Edelman in the near 17 future: On April 26, 2014, she will be inducted into the Penn 18 Center 1862 Circle, and on April 27, 2014, she will honored guest 19 speaker at Tabernacle Baptist Church; and 20 21 Whereas, at home, she is the wife of Peter B. Edelman, a professor 22 at Georgetown University Law Center. The proud parents of three 23 sons, the Edelmans enjoy four delightful grandchildren; and 24 25 Whereas, grateful for the legacy of consistent commitment and 26 excellence Marian Wright Edelman has bestowed on this great 27 State and our country, the General Assembly takes great pleasure 28 in honoring her on her recent induction into the South Carolina 29 Hall of Fame. Now, therefore, 30 31 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 32 concurring: 33 34 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 35 resolution, honor Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president 36 of the Children’s Defense Fund, on her lifetime of serving as an 37 ambassador for disadvantaged Americans and congratulate her on 38 being inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame. 39 40 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 41 Marian Wright Edelman. 42 XX 43
