1979 - 82 Church of Scotland , Edinburgh Solicitor & latterly Senior Assistant Solicitor to Church of Scotland. Lots of property related work, Industrial Tribunals & specialist ecclesiastical work.

1982 - 83 Freelance professional musician Professional bassoon player. Concerts, radio and TV recordings with Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and other groups.

1983 - 85 Wimpey Group plc , Bishopbriggs Regional Solicitor for Wimpey Group, including Wimpey Homes Holdings Ltd., George Wimpey & Co Ltd, Wimpey Waste Management. General responsibility for all legal matters including, primarily, estate acquisition & disposal. 5 secretarial staff. 300+ transactions per year. Liaison with other Department Heads to complete an effective team for throughput of high volume, high value house sales.

1987 - 2000 GORDONS , Solicitors, Edinburgh Formed my own legal practice from scratch, including all administrative requirements. Built up a Client base of some 1300 Clients. Took a keen interest throughout in new technology, including building PCs, installing all necessary software, self- and staff-training, maintenance and upgrades. The business carried out was primarily domestic conveyancing, with some Executry, Wills & Trusts, general chamber practice. A great deal of personal Client contact was involved.

July 2000 Business sold, as a going concern, to another Edinburgh Solicitors’ Firm.

August 2000 Scottish Power plc, Metering Business Stop-gap part-time work as electric/gas meter-reader in Edinburgh, before moving to Thurso.

July 2001 - Learning Dutch and carrying out translation work for agencies in the Netherlands and the UK.

March 2004 Associate Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting, (ITI) London; provisional registration, KTV (Kwaliteitsregister Tolken en Vertalers) (Dutch Ministry of Justice quality register for translators & interpreters)
