STATE STANDARDS AND/OR LEARNING TARGETS: STUDENTS TAKING THIS CLASS WILL EARN A .5 PE CREDIT. THIS CLASS IS DESIGNED TO EDUCATE STUDENTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF FITNESS IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN AN ACTIVE AND HEALTHY LIFESTYLE. DURING THIS SEMESTER FORCUS WILL BE ON THE FOLLOWING LEARNING STANDARDS:  WELLNESS (SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, MENTAL, AND PHYSICAL) AND STRESS MANAGEMENT  NUTRITION / GOAL SETTING AND PLANNNING  IMPORTANCE OF FLEXIBILITY / WARM-UP/COOL DOWN STYLES  FITT PRINCIPLE / HEALTH RELATED COMPONENTS OF FITNESS  SPECIFIC MOTOR SKILL DEVELOPMENT IN AND OUT OF SPORT PLAY  SPORTS CONCEPTS AND LIFETIME ACTIVITY CHOICES  SOCIAL AND PHYSICAL ATHLETIC INTERACTION EXPECTATIONS  FIRST AID AND HANDS ONLY CPR

MATERIALS:  CLEAN AND LABELED PE UNIFORM (SHORTS, T-SHIRT, PE SHOES – PER DRESS CODE OUTLINED IN PE HANDBOOK)  (OPTIONAL: SWEATS, SWEATSHIRT) – NO LABEL REQUIRED  LOCK FOR PE BASKET (PROVIDED BY LOCKERROM SUPERVISIOR) – PLEASE USE DAILY FOR SECURITY OF ITEMS IN THE LOCKER ROOM / $8.50 REPLACEMENT COST  COMPOSITION BOOK AND/OR SECTION IN BINDER

FEES:  ALL MATERIALS PROVIDED BY LOCKERROOM SUPERVISOR ARE SUBJECT TO A LOST OR DAMAGE FEE IF NOT RETURNED AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER. LOST OR DAMAGED LOCK COST IS $8.50.

COMPONENTS OF GRADING SYSTEM: YOUR PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADE WILL BE DETERMINED IN THE FOLLOWING 3 CATEGORIES: DAILY PARTICIPATION POINTS, FITNESS ACTIVITIES (I.E. FITNESS CIRCUITS, WATCH ACTIVITY, LAP RUNS, OR CARDIO TRAINING), AND WRITTEN/ORAL TESTS, EXIT TICKETS, ASSESSMENTS:

93-100% A 4.0 90-92.9% A- 3.7 87-89.9% B+ 3.3 83-86.9% B 3.0 80-82.9% B- 2.7 77-79.9% C+ 2.3 73-76.9% C 2.0 70-72.9% C- 1.7 67-69.9% D+ 1.3 60-66.9% D 1.0 0-59.9%F 0

DAILY POINTS: EVERYONE CAN EARN UP TO 5 POINTS DAILY (0-5 POINTS POSSIBLE). POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED FOR THE FOLLOWING: •UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT/LACK OF INCLUSION •LACK OF PARTICIPATION •INCOMPLETED MAKE-UP SHEETS •OFF TASK/UNSAFE BEHAVIOR •TARDINESS •LACK OF EFFORT •OUT OF UNIFORM/NON SUIT CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS ACTIVITIES: THE FITNESS ACTIVITIES ARE WORTH 10 POINTS (1 PER WEEK). THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, THESE PHYSICAL FITNESS ACTIVITIES MAY BE ASSESSED ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS THROUGH PERCEIVED EXERTION, SKILL PERFORMANCE, AND PARTICIPATION LEVEL. PURPOSE: TEACHERS USE A VARIETY OF INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES TO IMPROVE/MAINTAIN STUDENT FITNESS LEVELS. THESE ACTIVITIES MAY INCLUDE RUNS, FITNESS VIDEOS, CIRCUIT, AND FITNESS TESTS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS IN KEEPING THEIR HEART RATE IN THEIR TARGET ZONE FOR AT LEAST 20-40 MINUTES. INSTRUCTORS ACCOMMODATE STUDENT NEEDS BY DIFFERENTIATING THEIR INSTRUCTION TO MEET THE INDIVIDUAL FITNESS LEVELS OF EACH STUDENT.

WRITTEN/ORAL ASSESSMENTS: CERTAIN STANDARDS AND CONCEPTS ARE BETTER ASSESSED FROM OBSERVATION AND OTHERS WILL BE TESTED IN WRITING. CBA’S WILL BE REQUIRED TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THIS CLASS (I.E., HEALTH RELATED COMPONENTS, FITT PRINCIPLE, FITNESS AND NUTRITION PLANNING, MOTOR SKILLS PROGRESS).

ABSENCES/MEDICALS: PLEASE BRING A WRITTEN NOTE BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF CLASS, FROM YOUR PARENT/GUARDIAN WHEN YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO PARTICIPATE FOR ANY REASON. SPECIFY THE REASON, DATE, AND THE NUMBER OF DAYS YOU ARE TO BE EXCUSED. FOR ANY ILLNESS OR INJURY LONGER THAN 5 DAYS, PLEASE BRING IN A NOTE FROM YOUR PHYSICIAN WITH THE DIAGNOSIS, LIMITATIONS, AND RETURN DATE TO PE. ALL MISSED DAYS DUE TO INJURY OR ILLNESS MUST BE MADE UP WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF RETURN FROM MEDICAL ISSUE OR PREARRANGED TIME FRAME WITH INSTRUCTOR. WHEN IN DOUBT, CONTACT INSTRUCTOR WITH CONCERNS, EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT AND ADAPTIONS TO THE DAILY ACTIVITY MAY BE AVALIBLE AND ENCOURAGED. ** PLEASE REFER TO MY WEBPAGE FOR DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT THE POLICY AND PROCEDURE FOR MEDICAL CONCERNS.

MAKE-UPS: YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO MAKE-UP WORK WHEN YOU ARE ABSENT FROM SCHOOL OR WHEN YOU HAVE AN EXCUSE FROM YOUR PARENT OR DOCTOR. WHEN YOU MISS AN ACTIVITY DAY, YOU MAY DO AN ACTIVITY OF YOUR CHOICE OFF CAMPUS AS PER THE DIRECTIONS ON THE MAKE-UP SHEET LOCATED ON MY WEB PAGE OR IN THE APPROPRIATE LOCKER ROOMS (MAX 15 PER SEMESTER). WHEN YOU MISS A FITNESS ACTIVITY, YOU CAN MAKE THIS UP ON CAMPUS, DURING CLASS, OR BEFORE/AFTER SCHOOL, BY APPOINTMENT ONLY OR WITH THE OPTION ON THE TJH MAKE UP SHEET (MAX 5 PER SEMESTER). IF A MAKE-UP RUN IS COMPLETED DURING CLASS, A MAKE UP SHEET WILL ALSO BE REQUIRED FOR TIME MISSED DURING CLASS. YOU WILL HAVE 2 WEEKS FROM THE DAY YOU MISSED TO TURN IN THE MAKE-UP SHEETS AND FITNESS RUN SLIPS.

NON-SUITS: YOU ARE TO BE DRESSED IN PHYSICAL EDUCATION “UNIFORM” AS DEFINED IN THE HANDBOOK THAT WE HAVE PREVIOUSLY GONE OVER. WE ALL FORGET THINGS ON OCCASION AND THERE ARE A VARIETY OF CLEAN CLOTHES AND SHOES AVAILABLE TO BORROW ON A TEMPORARY BASIS. IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO BORROW PE DEPARTMENT CLOTHES OR SHOES (THIS INCLUDED BEING OUT OF UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS – SHORT SHORTS OR WRONG COLOR T-SHIRT OR SHORTS) YOUR GRADE WILL BE DIRECTLY AFFECTED AS FOLLOWS: 1 NON-SUIT- LOSS OF DAILY POINTS (5). CANNOT MAKE UP. 2 NON-SUITS- LOSS OF DAILY POINTS (5). CANNOT MAKE UP. 3 NON-SUITS- LOSS OF 2X DAILY POINTS (10). CANNOT MAKE UP. 4 NON-SUITS- LOSS OF WEEKLY POINTS (USUALLY THIS RESULTS IN A FAILING GRADE). CANNOT MAKE UP.

MY GOAL IS TO POST MY GRADES ONLINE EVERY FRIDAY, SO PLEASE HAVE YOUR STUDENT CHECK AND BE ON TOP OF THEIR GRADE THROUGHOUT THE GRADING TIME FRAME THEY ARE IN MY CLASS. THIS IS A TEAM RESPONSIBILITY TO STAY INFORMED AND SUPPORT YOUR GRADE (TEACHER, STUDENT, PARENT).
