Introductions by all members present.

Guest Speaker: Margie Barnes, Chairperson, Mayor’s Commission on Aging

 Mission is to advise the Mayor of senior issues  Report back concerns to City Council/Mayor  Fall 2010 – Senior Showcase – Sponsors will be needed, please contact Carey Raleigh for any interest as a Sponsor for this event  There is a maximum of 18 members, appointed by the Mayor – You apply online, those applications are forwarded to the Mayor, then reviewed by the Executive Committee and returned to the Mayor for him to decide the appointees. The only true criteria is that you must be a Resident of Virginia Beach  There are Liasons to the Commission  There is a volunteer award, the Lannie Hample Award – Awards are given to an individual and an agency based on services to seniors, please see website for additional details  The MCOA participated in raising funds for the JT Walk, Grommet Island Park & VBTFA was a generous sponsor, which the MCOA appreciates greatly  Transportation and Housing are hot topics for seniors in VB  The MCOA meetings are open to the public, there is room on the agenda for guests to make an announcement or public comment  If you are interested in speaking to the MCOA, please call Margie at 553-3121

New Business:

We are looking for a new Treasurer beginning June 2010! Please let Laurie know if you are interested.

Fundraising: No report

Legislative: Chris Warfel – Transportation – better & greater coordination, Livable Communities – Independent for as long as possible, 5% cut in MCD waivers – loss of respite hours, loss of slots, this will impact seniors and aides, General Assembly ends in March. Visit www.ssseva.org under advocacy to read more about legislative issues please! Membership: Jesica Jensen is now overseeing the Membership committee. Dues are $20 if you have not yet paid for 2010…

Publicity/Website: Carey Raleigh Kalvig - Website – www.VBTFA.org - is current. Monthly meetings as well as the minutes for each of the meetings are posted. Publicity – Nothing new to report.

Resources: Carey Raleigh Kalvig – VB Senior Resource Guide is complete. There is a pdf version of the guide on our website under Additional Info tab.

Scholarship: Judy Hackman: Applications are being accepted - the next scholarship will be given in the Spring. Must be VB resident and applications must be received no later than March 31st. Scholarship is for CNA’s for $500. 2 applications have been received.

Senior Needs: Lisa Demascio – No report

50/50 Raffle : Money was donated back to VBTFA for Pennies For Prescriptions by Ginny Brown.

Pam Dunn is unable to collect any clothing for the rest of February and the month of March. She collects, sorts and distributes clothing to local facilities.
