Materials: - Task 1: matching cards (pictures of animals and baby animals, animals name cards) - Task 2: animals name cards (from task 1), category tree (singular to plural), worksheet 1 - Task 3: worksheet 2, online story (A trip to the zoo) http://www.lancsngfl.ac.uk/curriculum/literacy/lit_site/html/fiction/bigbooks/zoo/front.htm - Task 4: worksheet 3, online story(Baby animals) http://cgcreations.org/babyanimals/index.html

Tasks: Task 1 – Who are they? Target items: animal names, baby animal names Materials: matching cards (pictures of animals and baby animals, animals name cards) (Appendix1)

Steps: Level 1 (for less able students): 1. Divide students in pairs and give out a set of matching cards. 2. Students take turns to match the pictures with the words. If the cards are matched, student can take the pair of cards. 3. The student who fails to match the pictures with the correct words will lose one chance. 4. The student who gets more pairs will be the winner.

Level 2 (for more able students): 1. Divide students in pairs and give out a set of matching cards. 2. Turn over the matching cards with the white side facing the students. 3. Students take turns to turn over two cards and see if the cards match the pictures with the words. If cards do not match with each other, students have to turn over the cards and wait for another turn. If the cards are matched, student can take the pair of cards. 4. The student who gets more pairs will be the winner.

3 Task 2 - Singular and plural Target items: singular and plural forms of animals and baby animals Materials: animals name cards (from task 1), category tree (singular to plural), worksheet 1

Steps: Level 1 (for less able students): 1. Teacher introduces the rules to change a word from singular to plural. 2. Teacher sticks the category tree and the corresponding animals name cards on the walls of the classroom. 3. Students find out the information from the walls to finish the worksheet. - Level 2 (for more able students): 1. Teacher sticks the category tree card on the wall of the classroom. 2. Teacher distributes the animals name cards to all students. 3. Each student reads the name card and decide which category it belongs to and stick the name card on the corresponding category tree. 4. Teacher consolidates the rules to change a word from singular forms to plural forms. 5. Students finish the worksheet using the rules.

Task 3 – A trip to the zoo Target items: animals names Materials: worksheet 2, online story (A trip to the zoo) http://www.lancsngfl.ac.uk/curriculum/literacy/lit_site/html/fiction/bigbooks/zoo/front.htm

Steps: 1. Teacher asks students about their experience of going to the zoo and the animals they can see in the zoo. 2. Teacher writes the animal names on the board in a form of mind map.

3. Teacher reads the story to the students. 4. Teacher asks students about the animals they can find from the story. Teacher adds the animals in the mind map on the board. 5. Students finish the worksheet base on the animals in the story and other animals that they can think of.

4 Task 4 – Baby animals Target items: baby animals names Materials: Worksheet 3, online story (Baby animals) http://cgcreations.org/babyanimals/index.html

Steps: 1. Teacher asks students’ experience of keeping baby pets. 2. Teacher writes the animal names on the board in a form of family tree.

3. Teacher reads the story to the students and asks students about the animals and their babies. 4. Students draw the new animal family tree on a blank paper and stick it around the classroom. 5. Students finish the worksheet base on the animals and their babies in the story.
