Mrs. Johnson

Welcome to Dance II!!!! In this class you will continue to develop an understanding of basic knowledge and skills of dance elements, the choreographic process, and performance qualities. You will also develop an awareness of the body’s movement, using sensory information while dancing.

Class Routines: Everyday you will dress out unless otherwise told not to by teacher. You will have five minutes after the tardy bell rings to get dressed in the locker room. Once dressed, you are to bring all of your belongings to the dance room where you may keep them in a cubby until class is over. Everything must be removed from your cubby every day before you leave class. You are responsible for all your belongings! Willow Wood is not responsible for lost, stolen or left behind items! Class will begin with a warm-up as well as some conditioning (ex. sit-ups, push-ups). Five to ten minutes before the bell rings, students will return to locker room to dress.

Rules of Dance: - Be on Time! - Always dress out. - No gum, candy, food, or drinks (If you are found with food or drinks in class or locker room, it will be taken up and not returned!) - Don’t talk when I’m talking! - Treat others the way you would like to be treated. - Always give me your best!!

Dance Attire: Solid black, gray, or blue leotard (or fitted tank top) and tights or jazz pants. Black Jazz Shoe (May need pirouettes for end of year show depending on costume)

Grading: Everyday you will dress out. If you are ill, you must have a signed doctor’s note or parental note to excuse you from participating in class. However, you must still dress out and take notes on the class unless you are physically unable to or you will receive a zero for that class.

Point distribution:  Student will start out with 100 for their dress out grade.

 Each day that you do not dress out 5 points will be deducted from your dressing out major grade.

 1 point will be deducted each day for incorrect uniform (ex. purple t-shirt and shorts)

 1 point will be deducted each day for hair not up, bra straps showing or wearing jewelry

rd  At the end of the 3 week the points are totaled for a major grade at progress report time and again at the end of the 6 weeks.

Grade Percentage:

Participation and Dressing out 70%

Section/Unit Routines and Assessments 30%

Performance Opportunity: At the end of the year, the class will decide on an overall theme or style of dance. One to two routines will then be choreographed by the teacher and by the students.

Everyone in Dance II will perform in the end of the year performance. The performance is currently scheduled for May 19 & 20. There will be after school rehearsal three days before the performance in which dancers are required to attend or they will not be allowed to perform. These rehearsals will be May 16, 17 & 18 at 3:00 until 5:00 in the WWJH Gym. Please leave these dates open. An information sheet will be sent home at a later date stating all the requirements, limitations, dates, etc.

Students will also have an opportunity to audition for a solo, ensemble, or duet that will be showcased in the Dance II performance.

Other performance opportunities include pep rally and basketball half-time performance by audition only. These auditions will take place during class in which all dance II students will audition and will receive a grade for their audition. If a student is chosen to perform in the basketball half-time or pep rally, they may decline the offer as these performances are optional. If the student accepts they must be able to make ALL rehearsals that will be held after school.

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Dance II! Please read the following pages about your child’s dance class so that together we can make this year a great learning experience for your child. Be aware that dance is a highly disciplined art form that requires a high level of physical activity during the majority of class. This includes practice (sometimes in and out of normal classroom hours) and wearing the appropriate dance attire everyday. Also, please understand this is a class in which critique is used to aid in improving performance/technique. For some students this will take some getting use to. Please sign below with a daytime phone number and an e- mail address for this is the easiest form of contact for us. Return this form with your child to school by August 30th. If you have any question, please fill free to call me at 281-357-3030 or email me at [email protected]. I’m looking forward to a great year!

Thank You,

Mrs. Connie Johnson Dance Instructor ------
