It is a lab science and can be applied towards the lab science required for graduation. Biology is basically a ‘hands on’ course and we will be performing many experiments using the scientific method. A high level of reading ability, self-motivation and ability to accurately record laboratory observations and draw reasonable conclusions is required for students in Biology GOALS/Course objectives: (Also see SUSD Core Objectives) When the student has completed the course fulfilling all requirements, he/she will be able to: 1. Describe nature accurately 2. Recognize, generate and state alternative hypotheses & learn basic laboratory techniques. 3. Generate logical predictions and conduct controlled experiments to test those predictions. 4. Have a basic knowledge of the natural world, including animals, plants, cells, and ecology. 5. Collect, organize and analyze data and develop reasonable conclusions from that data. Attendance: also see the Uniform Code of Student Conduct (UCoSC). Attendance is extremely important. Please arrange family vacations during breaks or weekends. If you miss class, your education and grades will suffer! You must come in after school to a make-up/tutoring/help session for each period they are absent. You must be on time to class. School guidelines will be followed for tardies. If you leave class for any reason without permission, or abuses your hall pass by staying out of class for more than 5 minutes, you will be marked unexcused absent for that period. If student is tardy or unexcused absent, they earn a zero for the warm up. Make up work: If you have has an excused absence, you will be allowed to make up the work they missed. (I may assign an alternate requirement or excuse the assignment at my discretion) You will have 1 day for each day missed to make up any missed work for excused absences. There is a web page with the daily assignments: it is your responsibility to look on the website and ask for the work missed. If the make up work is not turned in on time, a grade of zero will be earned. Late work will be accepted for credit within 1 school day of the assigned due date for 70% of the earned credit. After that time, students will receive an “NS” and it will be calculated as a zero for failure to submit the assessment. You will participate in labs that require written reports and will participate in some group activities. You are required to work in the groups assigned. (Each student will earn their own grade however, which will include cooperation within the group) All students will be shown the utmost respect, and are expected (required) to show respect to their fellow students and to Mr. Jones.
