Job Title LEADER OF MFL

Responsible to The designated member of the Leadership Team

Job purpose:

1. To maximise the achievement of students in the MFL department against national and locally agreed benchmarked targets. 2. To maximise the quality of teaching. In particular to ensure there is no ‘inadequate’ teaching and to maximise the proportion of ‘outstanding’ teaching. 3. (a) To ensure delivery of Teaching and Learning Strategies. (b) To ensure the curriculum is up to date and innovative. (c) To maximise the learning opportunities for students.

Principles of Leadership and Management at Beamont Collegiate Academy

Aspects of leadership which would apply to teachers with leadership and management responsibilities include:  Maintaining clear vision, purpose and high expectations, focused on students’ achievement;  Maintaining strategic planning for the subject, team or department co-ordinated with the Academy Development Plan;  Inspiring motivating and influencing staff and students;  Creating effective teamwork;  Providing knowledgeable and innovative leadership of teaching and the curriculum;  Commitment to running an equitable and inclusive provision in the subject, team or department;  Providing a good role model for other staff and students.

Aspects of management which would apply to teachers with leadership and management responsibilities include:  Undertaking rigorous self-evaluation and using the findings effectively;  Monitoring of performance date, reviewing patterns and taking appropriate action;  Using the performance management of staff to bring about improvement;  Showing a clear commitment to staff development;  Deploying staff effectively and assisting them in managing their workload;  Using financial and resource management effectively to support the achievement of academy aims. Specific Responsibilities

Standard 1 Knowledge and Understanding In order to promote and achieve the academy vision and purpose the post-holder should:  Maintain broad and current knowledge of teaching and learning and disseminate this to other teachers.  Co-ordinate and deploy academy/subject resources effectively.  Maintain knowledge and understanding of the academy’s aims, priorities, targets and action plans.  Understand and promote the benefits and effective use of ICT.  Understand and promote links between the subject and the wider curriculum.

Standard 2.1 Teaching and Assessment – Planning In order to promote and achieve the academy vision and purpose the post holder should:  Monitor and evaluate the planning of other teachers, providing constructive and developmental feedback on a regular basis.  Disseminate examples of effective planning practice within the academy/subject.  Ensure that teachers are aware of the needs of inclusion of all students and groups and make provision for this in their planning.  Ensure that feedback from lesson observation, work scrutiny and analysis of assessment data is appropriately reflected in teachers’ planning.  Establish strategic planning, including short, medium and long term plans for the development and resourcing of the academy/subject.

Standard 2.2 Teaching and Assessment – Teaching In order to promote and achieve the academy vision and purpose the post-holder should:  Ensure teachers are clear about the teaching of objectives in lessons, understand the sequence of teaching and learning in the academy/subject, and communicate this to students.  Observe colleagues teaching (using OFSTED criteria) and provide evaluative feedback on the effectiveness of their teaching strategies to bring about further improvement.  Identify and promote innovative and effective teaching strategies in the academy/subject to meet the needs of all students.  Co-ordinate/monitor the deployment of teachers, support staff and other adults to ensure their effective contribution to students’ learning.  Ensure the effective and efficient management and organisation of learning resources, including information and communications technology within the academy/subject.

Standard 2.3 Teaching and Assessment – Monitoring Progress In order to promote and achieve the academy vision and purpose the post-holder should:  Analyse and interpret relevant national, local and academy data, research and inspection evidence to inform policies, expectations and teaching methods.  Monitor and evaluate assessment data across the academy/subject to identify trends in student performance and issues for development.  Define intervention strategies to address issues for development that are identified.  Evaluate and report on the effectiveness of intervention strategies used to address identified issues.  Use assessment data to make comparative evaluation of students’ performance in the academy/subject.

Standard 3 Student Progress In order to promote and achieve the academy vision and purpose the post-holder should:  Identify quantifiable and challenging student progress objectives with teachers within their performance management objectives.  Support teachers in planning appropriate strategies to achieve student progress target levels and objectives.  Ensure that agreed student progress target levels within the academy/subject are achieved or exceeded.  Encourage students’ motivation and enthusiasm in the academy/subject, developing positive responses to challenge and high expectations.  Monitor the objectives and targets for students with SEN and promote the importance of raising their achievement.

Standard 4.1 Wider Professional Effectiveness – Personal Development In order to promote and achieve the academy vision and purpose the post-holder should:  Maintain ‘leading edge’ knowledge through reading, INSET and research to inform own practice, demonstrating impact in teaching and on students learning.  Assimilate and implement new curriculum guidance to lead the process of change within the academy/subject.  Prioritise and manage own time effectively, balancing the demands made by teaching, subject or team management and involvement in academy development.  Identify own personal and professional development needs.  Achieve own challenging professional objectives.

Standard 4.2 Wider Professional Effectiveness – Academy Development In order to promote and achieve the academy vision and purpose the post-holder should:  Co-ordinate strategies to achieve relevant academy improvement priorities that have been identified in the academy/subject.  Evaluate and report on the effectiveness of practice in the academy/subject annually, suggesting areas and issues for further improvement.  Lead professional development in the academy/subject through example and support and co-ordinate the provision of high quality professional development for staff.  Build effective links with the local community, including business and industry, in order to develop the academy/subject.  Use financial and resource management innovatively and effectively.

Standard 5 Professional Characteristics In order to promote and achieve the academy vision and purpose the post-holder should:  Create a climate which enables staff to develop challenge and support each other, resulting in positive professional growth.  Mentor and coach staff to develop confidence and maintain positive attitudes.  Communicate effectively and with professional integrity within and beyond the academy community.  Provide a positive role model for teachers and for other aspiring leaders and managers.  Take action to build and maintain effective teamwork with high expectations of outcomes.

Additional Duties Any other duty deemed reasonable, as directed by the Principal.

Review of Performance Performance Management reviews will focus on the postholders’ responsibilities as a leader and manager as well as those of a classroom teacher.

Expectations The post-holder is deemed to be a ‘good’ classroom teacher. The postholder is, at least, at Threshold Standards in their work.

a) To work consistently to uphold the Academy’s aims. b) To work in a co-operative and polite manner with all stakeholders. c) To work with student in a courteous, positive, caring and responsible manner at all times. d) To take an active and positive role in the academy’s commitment to the development of staff, and their annual review procedures. e) To work with visitors to the Academy in such a way that it enhances the reputation of the academy and the promotion of its good name within the community. f) To present oneself in a professional way that is consistent with the values and expectations to the academy. g) To take responsibility for the academic and pastoral oversight of the students in a tutor group when required to do so. h) To carry out a share of the supervisory duties in accordance with published rotas. i) To support the academy where appropriate with extra-curricular and community events.
