Older Adults and VA program theme: MGMC Home Health – Offers Home Health Services, Hospice Services and Public Health Services. They serve full age range from babies to older adults. Older adults live within their own homes as long as possible. They try to reach out and find people that are in need. They have 11 aides on staff and serve up to a 50 mile radius. Visits for personal care, environmental care, etc. They get referrals through a physician’s order. These referrals can range from Nursing, Counseling, etc. Hospice Care- Reaching the end of their life stage. This is meant to be a home based service. There is also the Israel Family Hospice house. Public Health-Offers foot spa clinics. Public Health nurses provide foot clinics to pamper clients a little bit but it also is a health need. This is a way they can reach into the community for those people that have these needs. They have a sliding fee scale and a financial application upon receiving services. Salvation Army (Dave) – Polk County Supplement Food Program-This is for Seniors 60+. They have an income guideline. They can get a box of food once a week. They will deliver food to other counties other than Polk County. They partner with Salvation Army. They come up to Ames once a month and contact Salvation Army for the dates and times they will be there. They also have delivered to Story City and Nevada. The Salvation Army has applications as do Heartland Senior Services. The only thing they really need is proof of age. They do not need proof of income. Individuals receiving this service need to fill out a new application each year. The recipient does not have to be present to receive the box of food; they can name a proxy to do this. If anyone knows of seniors that would benefit from this to please spread the word. United States Dept. of Agriculture and DHS of Polk County are our funders as well as ASSET. Volunteers will go to other small towns with boxes of food to distribute to people on this program. VNS of Iowa – Anna Vaughn- Not able to attend. Boost Together for Children – Marion Kresse- Not able to attend. Erika Peterson – financial program-Erika started this off with an exercise of what kind of debt you may have. What would it be like if you had no debt? Instead of paying backward, start paying it forward, as in buying a car with cash. You can learn how to do this with Financial Peace University by Dave Ramsey. Start with a zero monthly budget. You decide before your money comes in, where it will go to gain control of your budget. 1 step: Emergency fund of $1,000.00, 2 step: Debt snowball- put in every extra penny into this, from this you build a bigger emergency fund, college for your kids or give back to your community. EverydoYou can find more information at everydollar.com. Book called Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey.
