What is a Book Talk?

A book talk is a short, informal, spoken book review that does not give away the ending. Book talks are like movie previews; their purpose is to generate interest in the story without spoiling it. Most book talks are about books the reader enjoyed and recommends to others. However, it’s possible to give a talk about a book you did not like. Even if you didn’t enjoy it, someone else might. Either way, you should not give away any twists or surprises.

Instructions:

Create a 1-2 minute book talk about your second summer reading book (the one you chose from the 7 th grade list). Begin your talk with a hook, something that draws the listener in and makes them want to know more. Then include the title, author, genre, a short summary that does not spoil anything, and your personal review of the book. Did you enjoy it? Why or why not? Who do you think would enjoy a book like this?

In order to communicate your thoughts in an effective way in the time allowed, you will need to plan out what you are going to say. You can write a script or just make bullet points of the information you want to remember. Use the back of this pages for your planning and notes.

He/she says the title, author, and genre. It is 4 3 2 1 clear that he or she has read the book and understands its important details. Hook Student begins “book talk” with a hook that grabs the reader’s attention. This can be in the form of a thought-provoking question, a 4 3 2 1 startling statement, a favorite quote, etc. Spoiler-Free Summary Student summarizes the premise of the story in an engaging way. Main characters, their conflicts, and plot points from the exposition 4 3 2 1 and rising action are identified. No spoilers are revealed. Review Student shares his/her opinion of the book and backs it up with reasons. Students identifies targeted audience for the book (who 4 3 2 1 might like it best). Presentation Student displays the cover of the book. He/she speaks clearly and with expression for 1-2 minutes. Student makes eye contact with the 4 3 2 1 camera most of the time.
