Wilderness First Aid

Wilderness First Aid

October 8, 9 & 10 Firelands Scout Reservation Wakeman, Ohio

Quality education starts and ends with competent and knowledgeable instruction

WHY TAKE THIS COURSE? When accidents and sudden illnesses happen in the backcountry, they pose special problems for trek leaders and those charged with the responsibility of aiding those who are stricken. If members of a group aren’t prepared to deal with the emergency, not only can it lead to improper patient care, it can also endanger the entire group. Standard first aid courses assume quick arrival of advanced medical support in the form of professional emergency responders. In the backcountry, such help will be delayed and proper actions by the members of the trek are much more important. All outdoors people need specialized first aid training - training which encompasses all types of backcountry emergencies and which focuses on extended care issues. Wilderness First Aid addresses providing emergency care in a rural or wilderness setting. At least one person (preferably two) on every Philmont Crew (and other high adventure treks) is required to have Wilderness First Aid Certification. This course satisfies the first aid requirement of the Venturing Ranger Award.
