The Upper Room Emmaus

October 2000 of the Greater Fredericksburg Area

From the Lay Director . . . runners took a couple more steps and then stopped. They looked back and saw the fallen De Colores members and friends of the runner. Then, to the surprise of the crowd, they all Fredericksburg Emmaus Community. went back, helped the fallen runner to his feet, joined hands, and continued the race--all of them I greet you in the name of our risen savior crossing the finish line at the same moment.

Jesus Christ. May He bless you in all you do. Each one received a gold medal. As is the season for the Olympics, I received an email about a Special Olympics that touched my Our role as members of Jesus' church is heart. It went like this: helping those who fall to get back up. The church is not the place for competition; we must serve “Six developmentally handicapped kids lined together in unity. What Jesus wanted most of all up in a stadium filled with 50,000 people. These for the church was that we would be one. (John kids had prepared all year for this event. They 17:23).” wanted to win. Although they could not run well, they would give it their very best effort. As I read about these kids I could not help but feel joy about how they put the runner that had fallen The gun went off and all six began to run. before their own desires of winning. But they got it At about the 50-meter mark, one of the six runners right. It is not about one person wining the race but  fell down, face first on the track. The other five the whole body wining. In 1Corth 9:24 “ Run in such a way as to get the prize”, in other words, we are to run the race to win, but just what is wining? It is not always about coming in first or setting new world records or even receiving the prize. It’s more about running the race of life and wining when we help others who are not as fortunate as we are, or helping those who are going through rough times in their life. Winning can be as simple as a listening ear, a smile, a kind word or just being there when someone needs you.

These six kids could teach us a lot about working together. They used the gifts God gave them to help others. Are we using our gifts to the utmost to accomplish God’s will?

So “let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Hebrews 12:1

A Note from Angel. . . Hi Community Worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth. My prayer is that we each consider where we are in our relationship with the Father above. If we are in a May I ask -- Are you, Am I? place of Worship and Intimacy with Him, where are we? Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you. Intimacy: the state or fact of being intimate. Intimate: 1-pertaining to the inmost character of a thing... De Colores (He colors our world with love, will we?) 2-most private or personal... 3-closely acquainted or associated; very familiar... 4-promoting a feeling of privacy, Love in Jesus, coziness... 5-resulting from careful study or investigation... Angel I wonder just how many people understand that we each can have an intimate relationship with God, our Heavenly Father. Jesus made that way open to us, and was and is the example continually before us. He calls us to Worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth. We praise the Lord, and Bless the Lord and come to a place where we Worship the New Feature for our Newsletter - - Lord...

This place of Worship... This place of Intimacy can be a One of the (many) things that impressed me so much place where one can become selfish, where we become too when I first came to the Emmaus community was the cozy. This place of Worship can be a hard place. Intimacy requires that we give and because we are just people, we can way so many local churches came together in fellowship, tire of giving in the midst of wanting to receive more. Chrysalis Corner

We had a wonderful first Hoot on Saturday, September 9 at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church. We had 24 youth and a dozen “old” folks take part in the food and fellowship. We had a rock band which provided excellent music and song. Tracey Mann gave us a beautiful devotion on how God can use all of us, just as we

th are, for His purposes, and we enjoed a wonderful 4 day talk by Chad Lamb. Many of the attendees had never been on a Chrysalis weekend. For those who came out, we thank you for your support, and invite you all back to another Hoot at Bethel United Methodist Church in Woodbridge on Saturday, October 14, from 2:00 p.m. to

4:00 p.m. In fact, we invite all youth from age 15 to 19 even if you ahve enver flown on a Chrysalis weekend.

Learn more about Chrysalis and enjoy great music, fellowship, devotions and food! Team and Caterpillar applications will also be available!

We will be receiving Weekend dates very soon for Flights 6 (girls) and 7 (boys) currently scheduled for

January and February, respectively. Please continue to pray for our Chrysalis community as well as your involvement in Chrysalis. We still have a few committee positions that need to be filled by the community. You may contact Bob Davis (540-972-3499) or Greg Howard (540-786-2316) for more information. Remember,

Chrysalis is for youth aged 15 (and a sophmore) to 19 who are active in their church and have a desire to deepen their commitment to Jesus Christ and to share more deeply in the love that Christ offers. We hope to

th see you all on October 14 at Bethel UMC.
