Preschool Facilitator
Salary Range: Range 22-27 FLSA: Non Exempt Unit: Classified
DEFINITION
Under the direction of the Director of Student Services, the Preschool Facilitator will provide training services to the Early Childhood Education staff. The facilitator will help address issues associated with developmentally appropriate early childhood practices, classroom management, curriculum implementation and development. The facilitator will also assist in the inclusion of children with special needs and behavior management.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receive general supervision from the Director of Student Services. Will exercise no direct supervision of Preschool staff but may provide guidance to staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS The Preschool Facilitator classification is responsible for training Pre-School staff within the District. Responsibilities of this classification include: observe student behavior; coach employees, interact with site staff, provide training and assistance with classroom management. The work has technical and programmatic aspects requiring maintaining licensing regulations and guidance, the interpretation and application of policies, procedures and regulations, and involves frequent contact with the public. Incumbent at this level receives only occasional instruction or assistance as a new or unusual situation arises and is fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Incumbent may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. All of the duties listed below are considered to be “essential” with the exception of “Other duties as assigned.” Assesses staffs needs and abilities for the purpose of developing improvement plans, goals and objectives. Assists with the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of preschool instruction to insure the provision of age-appropriate curriculum, learning experiences and Page 1 of 4 Preschool Facilitator interactions to develop, physical, language, mathematical and social skills; design activities to enhance the child’s self-esteem and independence. Develops professional learning communities in the preschools as well as between the preschools and K for the purpose of bridging the gap between early education and elementary education. Models, assists and trains in the implementation of evidence-based early childhood strategies and techniques. Observes early education programs for the purpose of identifying areas for growth and improvement. Participates in meetings, workshops, conferences and other professional development activities. Make presentations to organizations and others as assigned; participate on assigned teams or committees. Confer with staff regarding behavioral or learning issues. Assists staff with and demonstrates effective child assessments problem solving and conflict resolution methods to promote positive interaction with children, co-workers and parents. Assist preschool staff in maintain classroom discipline; utilizing positive reinforcement strategies, methods of positive/progressive discipline and behavior modification to achieve classroom order. Use tact, initiative, prudence and independent judgment within general policy, procedural and legal guidelines. Coordinates/maintains a productive daily schedule for the purpose of coaching activities and other duties. Maintains records and reports on the progress and implementation of training and instruction. Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of and Ability to: Provide assistance in developing strategies for the inclusion of all children in early childhood education. Assist in the implementation of the California Foundations and Frameworks for early childhood curriculum and instruction. Use tact, patience and courtesy. Effectively interact with teachers, administrators, children, families and the public. Work as a team member, as well as independently. Use positive techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with parents, students, community members and staff. Observe all District safe work practices and policies. Maintain personal appearance, grooming and language patterns that provide a satisfactory example to pupils. Maintain consistent, punctual and regular attendance.
Page 2 of 4 Preschool Facilitator Possess the personal characteristics generally recognized as essential for public employees, including the demonstration of: integrity, initiative, emotional maturity, dependability, good judgment and ability to work cooperatively. Be reliable and have the ability to empathize. Use modern office practices, methods and computer equipment and applications, including word processing applications and basic principles of record keeping and file maintenance Communicate effectively both orally and in writing using correct English spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. Learn and understand the organization and operation of the District, as necessary, to assume assigned responsibilities. Use safe work practices including proper lifting techniques, trip and fall prevention and strain prevention. Establish, maintain and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Provide coaching services and strategies on a variety of issues including classroom management and behavior and working with children with disabilities in a preschool setting. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Maintain confidentiality Meet the physical demands and environmental conditions required by the position.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Education: A high school diploma or equivalent. Completion of twelve semester units in Early Childhood or Child Development Education. An A.A. Degree in Early Childhood Education preferred. Must meet No Child Left Behind (NCLB) requirement by any of the following: Pass a District administered proficiency test in Reading, Writing and mathematics; OR Completion of at least two years (four (4) semesters of 12 units or more) of study at a college or university; OR Earn an Associate’s degree; OR Complete 48 semester hours of college level coursework with a “C” grade or higher.
Experience: A minimum of three years of experience working in an early childhood program
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS: Licenses and Certifications are conditions of initial and continuing employment.
Position of and ability to maintain a valid California Driver’s License. Page 3 of 4 Preschool Facilitator Submit, at applicants own expense, his/her DMV motor vehicle driving record at the time of appointment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in disqualification.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS Maintain personal responsibility for maintenance of all licenses and permits.
WORKING CONDITIONS The work environment and physical demands of the position as described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Must possess mobility to work in classroom and/or office setting and use standard office and classroom equipment, including a computer, and to operate a motor vehicle. Corrected vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus: vision to read printed materials, a computer screen and to drive a vehicle to conduct work. Hearing and speech abilities required to communicate in person and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is essential to access, enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Employee must have the physical stamina and agility to turn, twist, bending, reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to reach and store supplies; stooping, kneeling and walking is required. Employee must possess the ability of observing children and staff behaviors.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Employee primarily works in a classroom environment with moderate to high noise levels, frequent interruptions levels and controlled temperature conditions. Employee may work outdoors and is occasionally exposed to loud noise levels and cold and/or hot temperatures. This position also requires employee to travel to various school sites. Employee may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Employee may be exposed to blood and body fluids.
