Title: Making Vaccines
A vaccine is a substance that protects the body against some kind of pathogen---usually a virus or bacteria or other agent that causes a disease. In this activity you will work in a virtual lab and create six vaccines, using a different technique to produce each one.
Procedure: 1. Go to the Making Vaccines website http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/bioterror/vaccines.html# 2. Read the introduction about smallpox. 3. Click on the Making Vaccines link on the right hand side of the webpage 4. The new page has a graphic, with pathogens arrayed at the top and tools at the bottom. 5. Click one of the 6 pathogens at the top. (As you pass the mouse over the graphics at the top, you will see the name of the pathogen and the type of vaccine you will create. 6. Follow the steps to create the vaccine. 7. Describe how you created the vaccine and provide details about vaccine characteristics and history. Use the data chart to record your descriptions!
Pathogen Vaccine Type Tools Procedure Vaccine Characteristics
Smallpox Virus
Measles Virus
Polio Virus
Tetanus Bacteria
Hepatitis B Virus
HIV
Discussion: Summarize the similarities and differences in vaccine types and methods. Why are some pathogens killed prior to making the vaccine, why are come vaccines make from live pathogens, and why is DNA isolated to make other vaccines?
Conclusion: Not Necessary
Reflection: Personal Statement
