MUNICIPAL INTERLOCAL AUTHORITY POSITION DESCRIPTION INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TECHNICIAN Top of Salary Range: $42,384

General Purpose:

Updated 2/10/11 The IT Technician provides hardware, software and network support, maintenance, training, and troubleshooting in a networked environment. Position will be required to provide support on a wide range of applications including Microsoft Office Products, MIA Web-based claims management software, and other related products. Position will assist in coordinating all computer and software related training and upgrades.

Supervision Received:

Works under the general supervision of the Information Technology Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities: Hardware/Software/Network/Training Activities

 Provides Help Desk technical consultation, training and guidance to MMIA Staff for a variety of issues.  Monitor and test repairs to ensure problems are resolved.  Performs general maintenance and installs for upgrades or updates on existing hardware or software in order to enhance system capability and performance at the desktop level.  Coordinate and/or perform repairs at the desktop level.  Maintains reference logs for troubleshooting hardware and software issues  Develop and maintain an inventory of hardware and software.  Assists in surveying and researching staff technical needs and provides corresponding instruction.  Builds, tests, and schedules reports for member entities, accountants, auditors, actuary, and MMIA staff upon request;  Performs EDI data transfers for MMSEA requirements, Workers’ Compensation Medical Bill review, and Workers’ Compensation Pharmacy agreements.  Assists with special projects upon request by or through the IT Manager.  Serves as back-up support to Information Technology Manager  Assists in the development of IT Department Operational Guides and Manuals.  Configure and install workstation computers.  Adds and Maintain SharePoint Users.  Monitors all server backup processes.  Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems.  Researches and compiles a variety of information materials from outside sources, summarizes the information, and prepares related reports accordingly; Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 Substantial knowledge of principles and techniques of personal computer uses and applications, electronic mail, word processing, data processing operations and systems, spreadsheet programs, database programs  Knowledge of network infrastructure and components;  Knowledge of virtual servers and SAN (Storage Area Network);  Knowledge of Voice Over IP communications;  Substantial knowledge of computer hardware;  Substantial knowledge of the operating characteristics, capabilities, capacities, and limitation of computer systems and related peripheral equipment;  Technical knowledge with Microsoft desktop operating systems with knowledge Microsoft Server operating systems;  Some knowledge of the principles and methods of training and instructing others in appropriate computer use and operation;  Ability to effectively troubleshoot and repair information technology equipment;  Ability to effectively troubleshoot and repair software, such as Microsoft Office Suite.  Ability to provide effective training and instruction to others, and to communicate with novice, intermediate, and advance users of personal computers;  Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and data;  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with assigned supervisors, other employees, and the general public;  Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;  Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;  Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;  Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;  Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;  Integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.  Possess a valid Montana driver’s license or the ability to arrange travel necessary to complete the essential functions of the position.

Desired Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience  Education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.  Minimum four (4) years of progressive, related employment experience;  Desired Certifications include, but are not limited to, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Operating Systems, Microsoft Systems Administration, Microsoft Server Operating Systems Tools and Equipment : This position requires use of an automobile, computer, network server and related instruments, telephone, audio visual aids (including projectors, and copy and fax machines.

The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up 40 to 50 pounds. The specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee predominately works in a controlled office environment however employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions while assisting program members or other employees. The employee travel will involve occasional overnight stays outside of Helena.

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
