The Guelph Enabling Garden (GEG) is seeking a Registered Horticultural Therapist. Core Garden hours (20 hours/week May – September 2016; and potential for reduced hours during October – November 2016 and Jan – March 2017.

GEG provides a fully accessible working/teaching garden for all Guelph and community citizens. It is designed to be a destination for visitors and clients to enjoy nature and the healing it provides. It is a garden that can be both actively used and passively enjoyed. Workshops are offered throughout the year that relate to various gardening aspects including assisting those with their own garden challenges, as well as for school-aged children, seniors, and those with varying abilities.

GEG is seeking an enthusiastic, creative individual to co-ordinate, plan, schedule and then execute Horticultural Therapy and related workshops promoting the vision and mandate of the Garden by introducing the programs to potential clients to ensure that the Garden is used by people with a disability.

Reporting to the Garden Manager, the Responsibilities are:

 Act as a Horticultural Therapist (HT) and program supervisor on-site.  Prepare a Horticultural Therapy program plan for the season (June – September)  Be present during workshops to act as a support person; to guide and assist people.  Organize and supervise support sessions for individuals and groups.  Act as a resource person for those using the assigned garden beds  Attract new customers/clients to HT programs.  Develop engaging programs and provide outreach to the community.  Evaluate programs for diverse population participation – ensure that people with a broad range of disabilities are participating in programs.  Coordinate supplies required for the workshops and teaching sessions.  Ensure that participants are working in a safe environment.  Report on workshops participation, activities and evaluate the capacity to meet the user’s needs.  Collect and submit any donations received at workshops and events to Treasurer.  Prepare a program schedule or calendar and assist in promoting Garden events and workshops.  Collaborate with the Volunteer coordinator to utilize volunteers in preparation, clean up and during all programming.  Assist Board in exploring the idea of external programming in the Garden.

Qualifications:

 Certification of Training in the field of Horticultural Therapy.  Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.  Independent worker with capability to be a team player in a client-centered environment.  Good problem solving skills and able to work in a flexible environment.  Commitment to the project and the benefits of Horticultural Therapy.  Post secondary school or work experience.  Strong computer skills, including all MS Office applications  Experience working in the not-for-profit sector, fundraising skills and working in diverse communities are definite assets  Professional or personal experience working with people with cognitive and physical disabilities as per the Guelph Enabling Garden mandate.
