Sample Letter For Parents Choosing to Immunize Under Protest

Merck & Co., Inc. Vaccine Customer Center 770 Sumneytown Pike WP97-A383 West Point, PA 19486-0004

Mr. Frazier:

I am a parent of a young child whom I am trying to raise so that he [she, they] will grow to be physically, morally, and spiritually strong. One of my responsibilities to not only my child but also to the children with whom he attends school is to ensure he is protected from preventable infectious and communicable diseases.

Because of the manner in which your company produces vaccines, particularly for measles, mumps, and rubella, I find myself facing a significant moral dilemma: Do I compromise my religious belief that all human life is sacred from conception to natural death and allow my child to be immunized with vaccines that have been made with aborted babies, or do I consider the potentially great harm to pregnant women and unborn babies if there were to be an outbreak (as we have seen recently) of diseases known to cause them harm?

I have chosen to follow the recommendation of our Church and have my child be immunized under protest to you, the manufacturer of these vaccines.

I urge you to invest in the research that will result in an equally effective vaccine that is not derived from unborn babies. Surely the human and financial resources at your disposal are capable of producing such a product.

I cannot stress enough the seriousness of my request. I write resuming your good will, and trust that you will honor this request by beginning immediately the process of finding an alternative solution to the current vaccines.

Sincerely,

Form #C141
