Details of Service RCSI Hospitals Group covers a population of over 800,000 people. Connolly Hospital’s Catchment Population of over 331,000 covers Dublin West, North Kildare and South Meath.

Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown is a major teaching hospital providing a range of acute medical and surgical services, day care, outpatient, diagnostic and support services. Emergency services are provided on a 365-day, 24 hour basis. Multi-disciplinary teams representative of medical, nursing, allied health professionals, management and general support staff play a pivotal role in the development, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of these services. The hospital has a current bed complement of 391 beds.

The hospital is affiliated to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) for medical education, to Dublin City University (DCU) for nursing education and to University College Dublin (UCD), Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and the Institute of Technology for allied health professional education.

The Catering Department is responsible for the preparation, cooking and service of food for all patients, staff and visitors throughout the hospital. The Catering Team consists of a Catering Manager, Catering Officers, Supervisors, Senior chef, Chef 1, Chef11, Trainee chefs, Catering Assistants main dept., Ward Catering Assistants and Clerical Administrative support.

Reporting Responsible through the Catering Manager for the efficient Relationship performance of all duties reporting to the Senior Chef, Chef 1, Supervisor and Catering officer in charge. Catering assistants on the wards also report to the ward manager and nursing personnel on duty.

Purpose of the Post To assist with the preparation and service of meals and beverages in the hospital at the required time in accordance with the hospital, food safety, hygiene and statutory standards. To ensure that the catering department and kitchenette service area are kept thoroughly clean at all times

Principal Duties and A - Duties on Assignment to Ward Catering Area: Responsibilities . Ensure the cleanliness of the ward kitchen and catering equipment and dining room if applicable. . Set up trays for each meal in accordance with appropriate procedures and wash up afterwards . Prepare breakfast at ward level each morning. Make toast as required and boil eggs if necessary for special diets . Plate all meals under the supervision of nursing personnel. Be aware of special diets. Ensure the correct temperature is maintained. . Distribute and collect menus cards and explain to patients and to co- operate with the introductions to new technology in this area to coagulate all information contained on cards and send summary to main kitchen. . Keep food stock levels at a minimum and order in accordance with the amount recommended by the Catering Officer. Assist with the receipt and recording of stock supplied. . Report any food waste or misuse to Catering Officer . To report all structural and mechanical defects and needs for repairs. . Keep all dry foods locked away and only leave out what is needed for patients' teas after duty. Ensuring the maximum security of your area of assignment and of all equipment and supplies contained there in . Distribute carafes of water and glasses to patients morning and evenings and when necessary. . Take part in training programmes e.g. Hygiene courses, food service and presentations etc. . Keep a record of any complaints or compliments received from patients and pass on. . To comply and practice all hygiene health and safety legislation and procedures. . To adhere to specifications standards and procedures while at work. . Carry out other such duties as may be assigned from time to time by the hospital management following consultation and agreement.

B - Duties on Assignment to Main Catering Department  Preparation of areas for the processing and service of meals and beverages  Portioning , packaging, chilling ,storage and movement of product to all areas of service  Preparation and cooking of foods that are requires to be undertaken at the point of service  Service of meals and beverages to staff , public, and patients alike and the collection and collation of cash  Cleaning of equipment and associated areas  Assisting with the receipt and recording of stock supplies while also including decanting of food and non- food items  Ensure that you maintain the cleanliness and good order of your area of assignment and associated areas to the highest possible standard  Ensure efficient and economical use of material and equipment  To adhere to all hospital policies specifications standards and procedures while at work  To practice and comply with all hygiene with health and safety procedures and legislation  To report mechanical defects and need for repairs  To take all necessary steps to ensure the maximum security of your areas of assignment and all equipment and supplies contained therein  To report to management , immediately , any accidents, fire, stock loss ,damaged unfit food and take such action as may be appropriate  To attend training courses when required  To carry out such duties as may be assigned from time to time by the hospital management following consultation and agreement.  To comply with controls and regulations in relation to the handling of cash

Eligibility Criteria Qualifications and/  Good Standard of Education or experience

A working knowledge of basic food hygiene (HACCP) and relevant Post Specific experience in either the healthcare hospitality or catering settings for a minimum period of one year. Skills, competencies Personal Qualities and/or knowledge  Demonstrate good communication skills  Demonstrate the ability to work as a team member and be responsible  Demonstrate an understanding of food safety and good hygiene practices  Demonstrate awareness and appreciation of the service user  Demonstrate ability to work on their own initiative and an interest in furthering themselves  Flexibility with regard to work patterns and working outside the normal roster hours

Tenure The appointment is on a permanent/Specified Purpose Contract and full time/part time and is pensionable. Appointment as an employee of the Health Service Executive is governed by the Health Act 2004 and the Public Service Management (Recruitment and Appointment) Act 2004.

Remuneration The Salary scale for the post is €26,001 to €31,830

Working Week The standard working week applying to the post is 39

HSE Circular 003-2009 “Matching Working Patterns to Service Needs (Extended Working Day / Week Arrangements); Framework for Implementation of Clause 30.4 of Towards 2016” applies. Under the terms of this circular, all new entrants and staff appointed to promotional posts from Dec 16th 2008 will be required to work agreed roster / night duty providing 24/7 service arrangements as advised by their line manager.

Annual Leave The annual leave is 23 days pro rata to time worked

Superannuation All pensionable staff become members of the pension scheme.

HIQA Standards / Appointees must have a working knowledge of HIQA Standards as they Infection Control apply to the role for example, Standards for HACCAP, Food safety and hygiene standards.

Protection of This post is one of those designated in accordance with Section 2 of the Persons Protection of Persons Reporting Child Abuse Act, 1998. You Reporting Child will remain a designated officer for the duration of your Abuse Act 1998 appointment in this post or for the duration of your appointment to such other post as is included in the categories specified in the Ministerial Direction. Such officer will on receiving a report of child abuse formally notify the Principal Social Worker in the community care area in which the child is living. An information pack containing more specific details will be issued on appointment to the post.
