Hatchmen There have been far too many incidents involving serious injuries on the waterfront, safety measures must be maintained. The hatchman has an important role to keep watch for stuff-ups.

Stevedoring Should the guidance material refer to the qualifications (Cert II, Cert III and qualifications Cert IV in Stevedoring) that have been developed for the stevedoring industry?

Training and regular refresher courses would play an important role for the workers to be vigilant at all times thus recognising safety hazards as they occur, trained workers can protect themselves and others who may be at risk.

Safety Induction Should the newly developed stevedoring ‘safety skill-set’ be used to skill-set underpin safety inductions?

Of course safety induction is an important role in any work place. New starters have little idea of risk, they're usually younger guys willing to take a seemingly small hazard as something to ignore...often at their peril. The new code should very clearly set out a mandatory safety induction as the first step in any training program. Qualifications are necessary as well as refresher courses.

Use of checklists Should the safety checklists, which set out examples of the types of hazards, and acceptable/unacceptable ways of handling those hazards, be maintained in the guidance material? Specific checklists should be a part of any job, a general pointer is useless as each day's work is different!!!!
