The Parish Eucharist on Mothering Sunday

A Service of Christian Hospitality

Sunday 26th March 2017 at 10am

Please take this booklet away with you.

WELCOME, especially if you are new to St Mark’s. May you discover here a glimpse of what you are seeking and find companions for your journey. Please stay for refreshments if you can after the service, and please introduce yourself to one of the clergy or welcome team.

Mothering Sunday was originally a time to remember “Mother- Church”, where faith is nurtured and disciples sent out to spread good news. It is also a time to celebrate all who have nurtured us and taught us what it means to love and be loved. As well as remembering treasured mothers and grandmothers, we also thank God for all who have shared with us the fruits of self-giving love. Inevitably, Mothering Sunday is a celebration for some and a reminder of difficult experiences for others. For this reason, we need to be particularly supportive of one another, recognising that one person’s source of joy is another’s cause of pain.

YELLOW LARGE PRINT versions of this service are available at the back of church, please take one if it is easier for you to follow. ALLERGY ADVICE: we use gluten and dairy-free bread at Communion and the wine contains alcohol. An alternative cup with alcohol-free wine is available, and can be requested during the administration.

2 To use the Induction Loop, please select the T Setting on your hearing aid. Please switch off mobile phones and pagers or set to silent mode. Thank you.

Before the service begins, you are invited to share in a time of quiet reflection.

Hymn

For the beauty of the earth, For the beauty of the skies, For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies: Lord of all, to thee we raise this our grateful hymn of praise.

For the beauty of each hour Of the day and of the night, Hill and vale, and tree and flower, Sun and moon and stars of light:

For the joy of ear and eye, for the heart and brain's delight, for the mystic harmony linking sense to sound and sight:

For the joy of human love, Brother, sister, parent, child, Friends on earth, and friends above, Pleasures pure and undefiled:

For each perfect gift of thine, To our race so freely given, Graces human and divine, Flowers of earth and buds of heaven:

words: F.S Pierpoint (1835-1917) Tune: Dix

4 Opening responses

For those whose lives are woven with ours in giving and receiving: we give you thanks, O God.

For those who walk with us, sharing bread for the journey: we give you thanks, O God.

For those who lighten our lives with laughter, fun and play: we give you thanks, O God.

For those whose loyalty sustains us in times of vulnerability and pain: we give you thanks, O God.

Prayers of Approach May God be with you and also with you.

Ever-beckoning God, you call us to leave behind falsehood and seek our integrity in you: may our hearts be open to your love and our minds to your truth, that we may learn to worship what is worthy and to serve what is good, in Jesus’ name. Amen. Please sit

Prayers of Penitence & Renewal

5 In the strength of God’s forgiveness, we acknowledge our own wrongdoing, and failings within our communities, resolving to follow Christ’s example of costly, giving love.

Silence for preparation. God of Compassion, when our hearts are hardened to the call of Christ, or to the cries of the needy; when our words and actions cause division or disrupt the pursuit of peace; by your grace free us from wrongdoing and liberate us to serve one another, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

May the God of love forgive you and free you from your sins, heal and strengthen you by the Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ. Amen.

Collect Let us pray.

God of love, passionate and strong tender and careful: watch over us and hold us all the days of our life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Amen. Common Worship

6 Journeying together in Faith As we prepare to explore God’s word together, we pray:

May God guide each of us, whatever our age or experience, in the way of Christ. The love of God be with us all. Amen.

First Reading – Colossians 3.12-17, read by Stephen Colver As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in the one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; teach and admonish one another in all wisdom; and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

At the end the reader says: How is this God’s word of life for us today? Followed by a time for quiet reflection.

Gradual Hymn

Mothering God, you gave me birth In the bright morning of this world. Creator, source of every breath, you are my rain, my wind, my sun;

7 you are my rain, my wind, my sun. Mothering Christ, you took my form, offering me your food of light, grain of life and grape of love, your very body for my peace; your very body for my peace. Mothering Spirit, nurturing one, in arms of patience hold me close, so that in faith I root and grow, until I flower, until I know; until I flower, until I know. Words: Jean Jantzen Tune: Mother Julian or Mothering God Gospel Readings - Luke 1.26-38 and John 19.25b-30

The good news is proclaimed for the heart of the worshipping c ommunity.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord.

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in G alilee called Nazareth, to a virgin engaged to a man whose name w as Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. An d he came to her and said, ‘Greetings, favoured one! The Lord is w ith you.’ But she was much perplexed by his words and pondered w hat sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God. And now, you wil l conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Je sus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom t

8 here will be no end.’ Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be, sinc e I am a virgin?’ The angel said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come up on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; theref ore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Son of God. A nd now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God.’ Then Mary said, ‘Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word.’ Then the angel departed from her.

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, O Lord.

Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, ‘Woman, here is your son.’ Then he said to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’ And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home. After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfil the scripture), ‘I am thirsty.’

A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the wine, he said, ‘It is finished.’ Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

11 Abiding Preparation

The bread and wine and the collection, tokens of our response to G od, are offered.

We hold up our smallness to your greatness, our fear to your love. Our tiny act of giving to your great generosity. Ourselves to you. Monica Furlong

The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving Let us pray (please sit or kneel)

May God be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to God.

Let us give thanks to our gracious God. It is right to give thanks and praise.

God our parent, your face is turned towards your world. In love you gave us Jesus your Son to rescue us from sin and death. Your Word goes out to call us home to the city where angels sing your praise. We join with them in heaven's song:

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of truth and love, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

12 Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Father and Mother of us all, we give you thanks for every gift of grace. To the darkness Jesus came as your light. With signs of faith and words of hope he touched untouchables with love and washed the guilty clean. This is his story. This is our song: Hosanna in the highest. The crowds came out to see your Son, yet at the end they turned on him. On the night he was betrayed he came to table with his friends to celebrate the freedom of your people. This is his story. This is our song: Hosanna in the highest. Jesus blessed you for the food; he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and said: This is my body, given for you all. Jesus then gave thanks for the wine; he took the cup, gave it and said: This is my blood, shed for you all for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in remembrance of me. This is our story. This is our song: Hosanna in the highest. Therefore, with this bread and this cup we remember how he died to set us free.

13 Defying death he rose again and is alive with you to plead for us and all the world. This is our story. This is our song: Hosanna in the highest.

Send your Spirit on us now that by these gifts we may feed on Christ with opened eyes and hearts on fire.

May we and all who share this food offer ourselves to live for you and be welcomed at your feast in heaven where all creation worships you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit:

Blessing and honour and glory and power be yours for ever and ever. Amen. Common Worship Eucharistic Prayer D - adapted Lord’s Prayer & Communion

As Jesus taught us, so we pray:

OUR FATHER in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

14 Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

The bread is broken. We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Words of invitation follow.

All Christ once was and continues to be is offered to us around this table, in bread and wine and in the company of others; so come, let us celebrate the feast.

Everyone is invited to share in the communion through receiving the bread and wine or, if preferred, a prayer of blessing. Please approach the altar rail with those around you. Gluten and dairy-free bread rolls are used; the wine in the chalices contains alcohol and the alternative chalice has alcohol-free wine.

Durng the administration the choir may sing an anthem At the conclusion, silence is shared.

Announcements

Appreciating

An opportunity to remember, honour and give thanks for our mothers and for all who share God’s love with us, embody Christ’s presence around us, and nurture the sacred within us.

Plants are brought forward

Gracious God, we remember and give thanks for those who carried us in the womb and cradled us in their love, who bore our pains and shared our joys; thank you for all who witness to your call that we should love one another as you have loved us.

16 May these plants become a token of our appreciation, as we share them with those we value, bearing witness to your eternal truth that it is through giving that we receive and in loving that we find our home in you. Amen.

Blessing

May the God of life and light illuminate your way, sustain you on your journey and bring you wisdom; and the blessing of God, Creator, Christ and Spirit of Life rest upon you and all whom you love, both living and departed, now and always. Amen.

Final Hymn during which the plants are distributed

Now let us from this table rise renewed in body, mind, and soul; with Christ we die and live again, his selfless love has made us whole.

With minds alert, upheld by grace, to spread the word in speech and deed, we follow in the steps of Christ, at one with all in hope and need.

To fill each human house with love, it is the sacrament of care; the work that Christ began to do

17 we humbly pledge ourselves to share.

Then grant us courage, Holy God, to choose again the pilgrim way and help us to accept with joy the challenge of tomorrow's day.

Words: Fred Kaan Tune: Solothurn Commission (please face the back of church) From what we know to what we have yet to discover God is calling us on. From all that binds us to the truth which frees us God is calling us on. From the blessings of today to the possibilities of tomorrow God is calling us on. Let us go in peace to love and serve our God. In the name of Christ. Amen.
