Biology Unit: Tissues, Organs, and Systems of Living Things
Overall Expectations:
Evaluate the importance of medical and other technological developments related to systems biology and analyze their societal and ethical implications.
Investigate cell division, cell specialization, organs, and systems in animals and plants.
Demonstration an understanding of the hierarchical organization of cells, from tissues, to organs, to systems in animals and plants.
Specific Expectations:
Awareness of ethical issues related to technological development (cloning, stem-cell research, organ transplants, transgenic plants) Medical imaging technologies (x-rays, CAT scan, MRI, endoscopy) used to diagnose and treat abnormalities in cells, tissues and organs. Describe public health strategies for diseases like AIDS, SARS, influenza etc. Cell terminology Mitosis in plant and animal cells, growth and tissue repair Compare organelles found in plant and animal cells Different types of cells found in plants and animals Cell division in cancer cells Organ systems and interrelationships between organ systems Stem cells and meristem cells, cell differentiation
