RE: Free Training Opportunity for Social Workers and Nurses Cancer Survival Toolbox® Train-the-Trainer Conference, Washington, DC Applications Due: September 20th

The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, the National Association of Social Workers and the Oncology Nursing Society are pleased to host a Train-the-Trainers conference on the Cancer Survival Toolbox®, at the National Office of NASW in Washington, DC on Tuesday, November 16, 2010.

The Cancer Survival Toolbox (http://www.canceradvocacy.org/toolbox/) is a premier audio tool produced by and for cancer survivors, to help newly diagnosed individuals, as well as families and caregivers, develop important skills to better understand and meet the challenges of their illness. The Toolbox has been validated for use in culturally, socio-economically, geographically, and cognitively diverse populations and teaches skills in communicating, solving problems, negotiating, finding information, making decisions, and standing up for one’s rights. The Toolbox was developed through a unique collaboration among several organizations: the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS), the Association of Oncology Social Work (AOSW), the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and the National Association of Social Workers (NASW).

This one-day conference will equip attendees with the skills needed to train their colleagues in using the Toolbox with cancer survivors and others affected by cancer. Ten nurses and ten social workers will be selected to participate in this training, which will be led by cancer specialists in nursing and social work, all of whom have been instrumental in the development and refinement of the Toolbox. Expenses related to the conference (travel, lodging and meals) will be covered by NASW. In the 12 months following the conference, each attendee will be required to train at least 20 of his/her professional peers and participate in a mid-year conference call to gauge the success of the program. The peer trainings will follow a template curriculum and will take 3-4 hours to administer.

NCCS, NASW and ONS are eager to expand Toolbox usage into non-traditional settings. We encourage applications from practitioners in employee assistance programs, home health, long-term care, primary health care, family services, pastoral care, and agencies working with other vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations.

We hope you consider applying for this unique opportunity. Please complete the attached application form and send it, along with your resume and cover letter, to Stacy Collins, MSW, senior practice associate, NASW, at [email protected]. Applications must be received by 5pm EDT on September 20 th. All applicants will be notified of the selection process outcome by September 29th. Please feel free to contact Stacy by e-mail if you have questions or need additional information.

Continuing Education Credits: Nursing and social work CEs for the November 16th train-the-trainer conference will be available for a nominal fee. __
