MnDOT Complete Streets Data Template

Last updated: June 19, 2013

This template guides practitioners to data relevant to develop a complete streets perspective for all types of projects, including planning, maintenance and roadway construction projects. The template will assist MnDOT and local project staffs by:

 Detailing and describing the location of complete streets related data,

 Guiding and establishing standards for the collection of complete streets data,

 Providing contact information for data relevant to complete streets.

The formulation of this template is an iterative process. It is an evolving product dependent upon users to guide development. For example, currently the template is a spreadsheet, but future versions may see it evolve into a web-based application.

Planning, maintenance and roadway construction projects by nature vary in specifics. There is no “typical” project. Therefore the data used to inform the design of roadways varies. As such, this template steers informs practitioners of data used to craft a complete streets approach to projects. It is not expected that every article of data detailed within the template will inform every project. For example: the “Local Park” field may not be useful every construction project. To address this concern a “Phase of Usefulness” field has been added to inform users when various data might be utilized within a project.

Data readily available for download detailed in the template in production data and is considered formally published. Metadata accompanies all production level data. The contacts listed in the template are not “official data stewards.” Instead, the contacts are people directly responsible for the daily maintenance of the dataset. This is beneficial because it provides users of the template direct access to data producers. However, it also means the “contact” field will need frequent update to accommodate changes in personnel.

Data not readily available for download detailed in this template will require manual collection or coordination with other entities. These entities may include: federal, state, regional or local government, utility companies, contracting companies, non-profit groups and others. Future iterations of the template will further detail specifics of data to be collected and maintained to ensure uniformity, usefulness and adherence to data standards.
