Multiplying by powers of Ten
When you are multiplying by a number greater than one your answer will be larger so move the decimal point to the right!
When you are multiplying by powers of ten and the exponent is positive move the decimal point to the right the number of places equal to your exponent.
Examples:
43.98 • 102=4,398
43.98 • 104=439,800 Note: place zeros in the spaces when you move the decimal place more than the original number of places
When you are multiplying by a number less than one (a fraction or a negative exponent) your answer will be smaller so move the decimal point to the left!
When you are multiplying by powers of ten and the exponent is negative move the decimal point to the left the number of places equal to your exponent.
Examples:
43.98 • 10-2 = .4398
43 • 10-4= .0043 Note: Remember a whole number has an implied decimal point after the unit’s digit. Place zeros as place holders in the spaces when you move the decimal place more than the original number of places.
