Textbook: Functions and Change (VSU edition), by Crauder, Evans, and Noell

Calculator: TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator required

Description: A study of common algebraic functions using a modeling approach. Formulas, tables, and graphs are used to analyze data and interpret results from applications in economics, finance, and the physical, natural, and social sciences.

Objectives: Successful students will be able to: represent quantitative relationships from a variety of applications using appropriate mathematical models, and use such models to solve real-world problems; extract, express, manipulate, and evaluate quantitative information in algebraic, graphical, numeric, and verbal form; and use appropriate technology to manipulate and evaluate quantitative information.

Tests: Four tests are given throughout the semester. Any student who misses a test or scores below 30% will receive a zero for that test. No make-up tests are given. The tests are tentatively scheduled for the following dates:

1 2 3 4 Tue Sep 6 Tue Oct 4 Tue Nov 1 Thu Dec 1

Homework: Students are expected to complete all homework assignments. Homework is not collected or graded.

Attendance: Students are expected to attend class regularly.

Grades: The course grading scale is as follows:

A = 85–100, B = 75–84.9, C = 65–74.9, D = 55–64.9, F = 0–54.9.
