STEP 1: CONVENTIONS Look at the parts of the essay to make sure it follows the guidelines set forth in the assignment. For any errors in this section, be sure to mark them ON THE ESSAY as well as here. 1. ______Is there a full, 4 lined, double spaced heading? Is it in the correct order/format? (see front board). Use a ruler if you are not sure. 3. ______Is there an interesting title? (Should not be underlined/italicized/bold/ or bigger font) The title can not simply be “Title of short story – by author”. If the title is missing, mark it on the paper. 4. ______Is there a header at the top right corner of every page? (Ex: Smith 2). No commas, no dashes. The header should be .5” from the top of the page. Measure it if you are not sure. 5. ______Is the essay typed in Times New Roman, size 12 font? IS IT DOUBLE SPACED? Catching? You should want to read more after the first 2-3 sentences. But they should also lead into the thesis… 2. ______Are there transitional sentences that guide the reader smoothly from broad ideas into the controlling idea of the essay (the thesis statement)? STEP 3: THESIS STATEMENT 1. ______Is the thesis the last sentence in the introductory paragraph? If it is not, mark it on the essay.

2. ______If not already mentioned in the introduction, does the thesis statement contain the author’s name and title of the short story? 3. ______Does the thesis statement include the theme and two literary elements? If not, it will need to be re- done. If the thesis statement is missing something, be sure to mark it on their rough draft.
