Requests for larger amounts should be discussed with Chuanwu Xi, UM-BICI PARTNERSHIP Executive Director. Seed grants not exceeding $50,000 may also be considered for projects requiring finite achievements (i.e. generation of data or a prototype necessary to apply for subsequent translational funding). A budget template is included in this packet. Please use this template and submit with your proposal. - The PI salaries and benefits should not exceed 10% of the total project budget. - Tuition for graduate students is allowable. The proposal budget can include tuition up to the Rackham pre-candidate, full term rate, $10,966 estimated for FY 2016. - Allowable budget expenditures include: salary and fringe benefits for project personnel, materials and supplies, equipment, travel and other. - Large capital purchases (>$15,000) are prohibited.

Project Description –Projects will be judged on the following review criteria.

. Project Rationale: Target Market/ Unmet Need- Provide description of unmet industrial needs that might be met by new technology/product developed from the proposed translational research.

. Competing technologies and benefit analysis – It is extremely benefitial to create a holistic view of all relevant technologies. Running analysis of competiting technology, including performance comparisons, benefits, and risks, will help you identify the best technical approach and, eultimately, generate technical and commercial impacts.

. Research Stage/Description of Technology – The UM-BICI PARTNERSHIP Program is focused on translational research designed to either derisk and accelerate commercialization of promising technologies or develop innovative technologies/approaches with clear applications. All but very early stage (i.e. hypothesis testing) projects will be considered. Describe the technology, early research findings and evidence to justify the translational research plan. Note that there isn’t a preference/score for the research stage—the committee needs to understand the stage and technology identified and translational vision for the technologies.

. Translational Research Plan – Is the research plan based on sound principles? Is the research plan feasible? Is the research plan clearly presented? How will the research plan support go/no go decisions to continue product development, and to what extent will results generate investor interest?

. Quarterly Milestones - Expected specific milestones per quarter and plan for achieving them. These should align with the Translational Research Plan.

. Commercialization Potential – What is the commercial product envisioned by applicants? What are the competing products and technologies? What is the earliest likely timeframe that a product resulting from this research could make it to market? What are the perceived barriers to commercialization?

. Intellectual Property – Has an invention disclosure been filed with the Office of Tech Transfer (OTT)? What is the IP protection strategy for the idea (patent, copyright, trade secret)? A high-level patent search of competitive technologies is strongly encouraged.
