Attendants: Bekele Afessa, Antonio Artigas, Maurizia Capuzzo, Akos Csomos, Hans Flaatten, Bertrand Guidet, Ken Hillman, Gaetano Iapichino, Andy Jones, Nina Maguina, Paolo Merlani, Philipp Metnitz, Bushra Mina, Yen-Lan Nguyen, Thomas Nolin, Hajo Reissman, Hans Ulrich Rothen, Rosemary Snell, Christos Tsokantaridis, Andreas Valentin, Peter van der Voort, Sten Walther

The meeting was opened by Maurizia Capuzzo, who welcomed the participants to the HSRO Section meeting. She emphasized that, despite the early morning time, the meeting was attended by many people, so she thanked all the attendants, who demonstrated their interest in the activities of the Section. Then, she presented the agenda of the meeting.

As first point, she reported about the changes in the statute and the organization of the ESICM. The statute and Standard Operating Procedures which have been introduced can be found in the web site. However, the most relevant changes are the introduction of Clinical Trial Group and a Systematic Analysis Unit. ECCRN will continue to be responsible for the evaluation of the requests of endorsement or support of the researchers. The board of the Clinical Trial Group is composed by 11 persons: Daniel De Backer (Research Committee), Jean-Daniel Chiche (Development of Scientific Affairs) and Elie Azoulay (Ethics), Jean-Charles Preiser and Jordi Rello (selected members), and Andres Esteban, Zolt Molnar, Antonio Pesenti, Jukka Takala, Jean-François Timsit + D Annane (Chair of the Metaanalysis Group). The ERIC registry has a Chair who is Goran Karlstrom (Sweden).

The number of the Section members ,second point of the agenda, is now increased to 833, and 110 of them are voting members. This demonstrates that the HSRO topics are more and more attractive. The 22nd ESICM Congress was the third point of the agenda. The Section is involved in 4 Thematic sessions, 4 Pro/Con debates, 1 Continuous Professional Development, and 1 Clinical Challenge session. The number of abstracts submitted to the Congress increased by 12% and that of the abstracts of the Section increased by 20%. Rejection rate were 11.5% and 12%, respectively.

The subsequent point of the agenda concerned the preliminary program of Barcelona 2010. Maurizia Capuzzo showed some hypotheses, including a two-days Postgraduate Course on organization. Philipp Metnitz suggested that a two-days course was too long and expensive for both organizers and attendants. Hans Flaatten and others agreed, so it was proposed to have a course of one and a half day, starting in the afternoon, so that participants can arrive on the first day. The title chosen was “The Practice of Health Care Delivery in ICU”, topics and speakers were discussed. Maurizia Capuzzo proposed a 2-h thematic session on “Quality Indicators across European ICUs”, including experiences in different European Countries and some topics for joint sessions with Ethics, Nursing THAI sections. The number of proposal is high, but this increases the chance of having section topics selected. The attendants gave suggestions for speakers and topics.

The Section meeting had to finish at 8.30. Its duration was shorter than in the previous meetings, so the Chairmen of the Working Groups did not have time to present their report. However, the meetings of Working Groups on Outcome, Quality Improvement, and Health Economics were held on the same day and the minutes will be in the web-site.

The next meeting will be held at the ISICEM congress in Brussels and date and location will be communicated as soon as possible.
