Creating an Internet-Friendly

Iss. 2/26/05 Creating An Ascii-Text / Electronic Resume (Internet-Friendly format)

This resume format is specifically designed for Internet postings to meet the online format requirements at executive job boards (ChiefMonster.com, 6FigureJobs.com, Dice.com, etc.), search firms, and employer websites. This resume is normally electronically scanned for keywords. It is rarely emailed, printed or reviewed visually in hardcopy.

Once posted to the job board etc., the client must assure the resume is REFRESHED WEEKLY to receive as many views, hits, and/or keyword scans as possible. If the job board etc. site where the resume is posted has no Refresh button/capability, then a simple Edit/Save should be made to the resume by the client (add/delete a word, add/remove middle name initial, etc.).

 Create and Open a one-page resume*** as a new MS Word or WordPerfect document.  Enter a keyword field near the bottom of the document, including as many functional skill set keywords as possible, if not already included elsewhere in the body. Use the following format: keyword / keyword / keyword / keyword  Make a final entry at the bottom of the document: “Full Market Brochure Detail Available Upon Request”.  Depress File, click Page Setup, and change margins to: Top 1.0”, Bottom 1.0”, Left 0.7”, and Right 4.0”; click OK.  Depress the Left Justified button.  Save the document (Save As) in MS Word or WordPerfect as a Text Document with a .txt file extension.  Depress the Show/Hide format button ¶ on the Toolbar to show carriage returns (shown as symbol ¶) and spaces (shown as symbol ·) in the document.  Depress/Undepress any of the 5 formatting buttons on the toolbar to remove all formatting, i.e. Bold, Italics, Underline, Bullets, and Borders. Also delete/change any special characters from the body of the text such as ®, ♦, and the like. The entire document should now be plain text with no formatting.  Click Edit and Select All, or highlight the entire document.  Change the Font on the toolbar to Courier New; change the Font Size to 10.  Enter a carriage return at the end of EVERY line, again shown as symbol ¶ when the Format button is depressed on the Toolbar. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP IN THESE INSTRUX.  Delete any resultant blank lines or spaces created by the carriage returns at the end of each line.  Save the document; assure it is saved as a filename.txt document.  It is now ready to post online on job boards, search firms, and/or employer websites.  Open the document, click Select All or highlight the entire document, click Edit and Copy (or ctrl C), then Paste (or ctrl V) into the small white “window” at job board, search firm, or employer websites.

***The initial MS Word or WordPerfect .doc resume should have an abbreviated Accomplishments section (3-4 Accomplishments) as well as an abbreviated Career Summary section including only title, company, years, limited to significant responsibilities such as large geographic coverage, large budgets, large spans- of-control, large P&L, etc. By design, detailed responsibilities should NOT be included in this resume.

See the accompanying example electronic resume included on the following pages. Disregard its content, but rather review it for its finished look and section formats only. EXAMPLE ASCII-TEXT RESUME
