OUTREACH NOTICE Clayton, New Mexico Support Services Specialist, GS-0342-5/6/7 The Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands, Cibola National Forest will be filling a GS- 0342-5/6/7, Support Services Specialist. This position is a permanent fulltime position with a duty station in Clayton, NM. This notification is being circulated to inform prospective applicants of this upcoming opportunity and to determine interest in the position. Position: The primary duties of this position are the District Support Services Specialist and program management of the administrative and budget programs on the Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands. The district administers approximately 140 Term Grazing Permits and authorizes grazing for approximately 5,000 cattle each year. The Support Services Specialist will be responsible for issuing Bill of Collection and associated correspondence. The position requires full coordination and interaction with other resources on the district, the supervisor’s office, three state agencies, and other federal agencies. Responsibilities include micro-purchasing, mail services, budget tracking and analysis, IAS input, all administrative duties and responsibilities, a working knowledge of POSS and the supervisory experience. Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands: The Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands are located within the shortgrass prairie of the Southern Great Plains and within the pinyon and juniper woodland of the Canadian River Canyon. These grasslands encompass approximately 239,000 acres in six counties within New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. The Canadian River Canyon is a rugged 900 foot deep canyon which provides habitat for mule deer, bear, lion, Barbary sheep, waterfowl and provides for warm water fishing. The plains of the Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands provide habitat for quail, pronghorn, black-tailed prairie dogs, fox, bobcat, and a variety of raptors. Community Population/Diversity/General Characteristics: The latest census shows 4,124 people in Union County with 2,484 of those residing in the city of Clayton. The population is a mix of Hispanic, Mexican, and Anglo descents. The community of Clayton, New Mexico is geographically within a short driving distance of Texas and Oklahoma and moderate driving distance of Kansas and Colorado. Clayton is at the intersection of U.S. Highways 64, 56 and 87. It is located approximately ten miles from the Texas or Oklahoma borders. Amarillo, TX is 128 miles to the southeast, Trinidad, CO is 104 miles to the northwest and Boise City, OK is 43 miles to the northeast with Kansas another 95 miles.

Clayton, New Mexico is a small community with a population of 2400 and provides a full range of basic services to residents in northeastern New Mexico. Housing is available at an affordable cost (2 or 3 bedroom 1 or 2 baths on the market in prices ranging from $80,000 to $140,000), including apartments and rentals (rents are starting to drop but are available from $500 to $1,000 per month). Schools services include elementary, junior high and high schools as well as charter and private schools. A variety of medical services (doctors, dentists, and some specialists) are available and the community is home to a hospital. A variety of commercial services are also available. Some employees choose to live in Dalhart, TX which is 45 miles southeast of Clayton.

Dalhart is a community of more than 7,000 that is the county seat of Dallam County and sits at the crossroads of three major highways. It is a full service community. Residents wishing for the big city experience often travel to Denver, Colorado (290 miles), Amarillo, Texas (128 miles) or Albuquerque, New Mexico (260 miles).
