Course Name: Career Awareness

Course Description: The goal of this course is to promote essential knowledge and skills students need to develop a positive self-concept. This course will provide students with opportunities to identify interests, abilities, aptitudes, values, and personality traits as they relate to career planning, to develop a keen understanding of the value and benefit of work, and to differentiate between jobs and careers. In this course, middle school students will experience a variety of activities which promote self-awareness, self-management skills, leadership, teamwork, career exploration, and educational planning related to students’ future educational and career plans.

Course Objectives and CTAE Performance Standards: MSCA6-1: Students will understand the personal nature of work and how it relates to them as individuals and as an integral part of society. MSCA6-2: Students will demonstrate an understanding of how to build and maintain a positive self- concept and self-esteem. MSCA6-3: Students will describe, develop, and evaluate how positive interpersonal skills affect their ability to work successfully. MSCA6-4: Students will illustrate effective personal management skills. MSCA6-5: Students will participate in career-related assessments. MSCA6-6: Students will utilize the planning process to achieve personal, social, financial, educational, and career goals. MSCA6-7: Students will analyze societal issues as it relates to career awareness. Grading Policy: Based on a scale of 100, student grades will be weighted as follows: Tests/Quizzes-40%, Class Work-50% (includes projects & participation) and Homework-10%. Extra help provided before school on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 7:30-8:00. Students can also receive extra credit when they dress for success on Wednesdays! Three days of extra credit will excuse 1 zero assignment, (not used for projects, quizzes, or test). No jeans, tennis shoes, hoodies, t-shirts, shorts and varied type boots for dress up days. This is optional and only if you have it!!!

Grading Scale: Schedule “A” or “B” week A = 100 - 90 8:30- 8:35 HOMEROOM B = 89 – 80 8:35- 9:25 1st or 7th (8th grade) C = 79 - 71 9:28- 10:18 2nd or 6th (7th grade)

D = 70 10:21- 11:11 3rd or 5th (7th grade)

F = 69 and below 11:14- 12:50 4th & lunch (planning)

Please view your child’s agenda daily, as I will use it to communicate with you. I will also contact you via phone calls, progress reports and notes.
