21st July 2015 Dear Parents,
Here we are at the end of another school year. It’s been a great year for us as a school and I hope that you have some special memories too. As Headteacher and their class teacher, I want to wish a very special farewell to all of our year 6 children, and parents, who are moving on to their new secondary schools and the next chapters in their lives. They have been an absolute pleasure to teach and a pleasure to have as part of our school family.
Thank you for all you support since I have taken over. I am very much looking forward to September and the future.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the staff, and particularly the teachers for all of the additional hours that they put into writing your children’s school reports. I hope you enjoyed reading them.
SATS RESULTS

Key Stage 2 2015 Results National Average 2014 Reading 100% level 4(79% Level 5) 89% level 4(50% level 5) Writing 100% level 4 (76% Level 5) 85% level 4 (33% level 5) Grammar & Spelling 97% level 4 (69% Level 5) 76% level 4 (52% level 5) Maths 100% level 4 (79% Level 5) 86% level 4 (42% level 5)
We are very proud of our results and have worked hard over the past few years to ensure that we continue to stretch further and further away from the national averages. This year, disappointingly, five children from year 6 missed out on a level 5 in grammar by 1 mark. I have sent one of the papers back to be reconsidered. Whilst this is disappointing, it demonstrates that we are moving in the right direction.
As is always the case, we have begun our analysis of the SATs papers and of all the results across the school. These findings will be used to create my new strategic plan for September and beyond.
LIFE BEYOND LEVELS - We are in the process of developing our new assessment system, in line with Hampshire’s recommendations. We will hold a parent’s information evening on Wednesday 11th November at 7pm so that you are well prepared for our parent’s evening meetings later that month.
CLUBS – Thank you for your club responses. Please do try and get them in tomorrow if you want to guarantee your places for September.
VALUES HOMEWORK – Thank you also for all the responses to my values homework. If you do get the chance to drop yours in tomorrow that would be great!
www.rowledge.hants.sch.uk BABY NEWS! – Congratulations to Joe Yates who survived his baby shower last night! We are delighted for him and Nikki who are expecting their first child at the end of August. Mr Yates is planning to return to school at the beginning of the new school year as normal. He will then take his paternity leave at a slightly later date. This will be covered by Mrs Helen Owen, who is already well known to the children.
EASYFUNDRAISING - I’m now up to £28.79 in funds raised from my on-line shopping. Our school total is £403.08 and we now have 43 people on board. I hope more of you can sign up over the summer. http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/
HEALTH & SAFETY and DOGS – We recently reviewed our Health & Safety policy with our governors. It came to my attention that our policy states that dogs should remain at the end of the drive (in the recreation ground), rather than being tied up outside the school gates. Despite being a dog lover, I need to consider all of the children in the school and some of them are less comfortable with dogs, particularly when they bark their hellos. Therefore from September please can all dogs remain at the end of the drive unless they are visiting the school for a specific reason i.e. for Pet Day or by special arrangement. The full Health & Safety policy will be uploaded onto our website during the holidays.
BIKES AND SCOOTERS – Thank you for your support in making sure that the drive is safe and that children walk their bikes and scooters down it. This has improved greatly recently and I have been giving out lots of house points. We encourage the children to remind us to give these out if they are doing the right thing.
ATTENDANCE REMINDER – Please be reminded that from September the government changes will mean that you could be fined for unauthorised absences or lateness. I do not want to issue any fines, however I do have to report and absence or repeated lateness to the county. We are moving to electronic registers to ensure that this is a fair process. The registers will be submitted at 9am. Please ensure that your child is in class by 8:55am at the latest to ensure that they are registered. If your child is late they will be recorded as late. However discretion will, of course, be used depending on individual circumstances. If you do have difficulties getting your child to school on time please let us know and we will try and help you.
HANGING BASKETS – Thank you to anyone who was involved in making our hanging baskets look wonderful this year. We received ‘Highly Commended’ from the Mayor on judging day.
SCHOOL DISCOS – Thank you also to all those who came to help with the school discos last night. The children had a great time! We will present the money to Grassroots and CHIKS tomorrow in a special assembly.
VOLUNTEERING IN SCHOOL – We can never have enough help in school and love to see you here. Please drop your child’s class teacher a line or contact me if you can offer any regular help from September.
SPORTS & OTHER NEWS – Please go to our website for a Sports Newsletter from Mrs Jones and our Rowledge Racket Newspaper from the children.
HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES - As we are linked to the Alton schools I have just been sent this. Some great opportunities: http://www.haveagoalton.org.uk/
PARENTS CLASS INFORMATION MEETINGS – remember to pop these 2:30pm meetings in your dairy:
Year One / Two: Tues 8th Sept. Year Six / Five: Wed 9th Sept Year Three / Four: Thurs 10th Sept
INSET DAYS – Please note the following Inset Days for the next academic year: Monday 1st and Tuesday 2nd September, Monday 2nd November, Monday 4th January and Monday 11th April. I did speak to Weydon about their Inset Days as I would have liked to coordinate with them, however unfortunately their dates just don’t fit in with my learning schedule for staff, which is an important part of our school development.
We will all look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the picnic tomorrow. Happy Holidays!!!!
Kind regards
Sarah Oliver Headteacher
