Caregiver’s Answers, Topics, and Helpful Information

In an endeavor to continually assist caregivers in their search for pertinent information regarding eldercare, our Information and Referral Specialists address topics of most frequently asked questions via Caregiver’s Answers, Topics and Helpful Information (CATHI). Additionally, caregivers are also invited to e-mail individual questions and an Information and Referral Specialist will reply.

Dear CATHI,

Question: I am the only person caring for my loved one. How can I get other family members to help with their care?

Answer: Caregiving can be stressful especially if you are the only person providing care. There are ways however, to get other family members or friends involved.

 Call a family meeting:

This will allow you to talk with all family members at once. You can explain that you need assistance. Be sure to include any family member who may be able to contribute.

 Discuss how decisions will be made:

If the loved one you are caring for is able then they will be able to make decision themselves regarding their care. If the person is not able, consider establishing a Durable Power of Attorney or Health Care Power of Attorney. This designated person will be able to make the decisions they feel are best.  Don’t be afraid to take charge: Sometimes it may be necessary for someone to step forward and designate tasks to other family members. However, be sure to keep in mind that everyone’s ideas should be considered.

 Designate tasks for each family member to complete:

One person can be assigned to doctor appointments, another to grocery shopping, someone can handle finances and ensuring bills are paid, and so on.
