Letter of Confirmation: Relieving Principal

The XXX Board of Trustees is pleased to confirm that you will be acting into the position of principal for (up to .4) commencing x and ending on x. The reason for acting as a relieving principal is to release the current principal to assume duties of the Community of Learning leadership role.

If under Secondary Teachers’ Collective Agreement: Your terms and conditions of employment remain under the Secondary Teachers’ Collective Agreement.

Clauses 4.15.2 below applies to teachers who act as relieving principals for Community of School Leadership roles:

4.15.2 When a permanent teacher(s) relieves in the position of principal in the same school because the principal has been released to undertake the functions of the Community of Schools Leadership role they shall be paid an allowance from the date they began the additional functions, provided that:

a. they will be undertaking the additional functions for a cumulative period of more than two weeks; and b. the payment shall be an allowance representing the difference between the teacher’s salary and the minimum rate applicable to the principal’s position but shall not be less than the rate of salary in the teacher’s own permanent position; and c. as the teacher(s) is not undertaking the whole of the principal’s role, the allowance will be pro-rated provided the payment(s) to the teacher, or teachers in combination, do not exceed the total allowance payable for the portion of the time the principal is undertaking the Community of Schools Leadership role.

If under Primary Teachers’ Collective Agreement: Your terms and conditions of employment remain under the Primary Teachers’ Collective Agreement.

Clauses 3.16 below applies to teachers who act as relieving principals for Community of Learning Leadership roles: 3.16 Relieving Principal

a. Where a teacher relieves in the position of principal for a period of more than two weeks, payment for the period concerned shall be an allowance representing the difference between his/her salary (if any) and the base salary rate that would be payable if the teacher was appointed to the position of principal but shall not be less than the rate of salary in the teacher’s own position. b. The allowance shall be paid from the first day of acting up including the first two weeks. c. This allowance shall be included in the teacher’s salary in order to calculate appropriate holiday pay for the teacher. d. When a permanent teacher relieves in the position of principal in the same school because the principal has been released to undertake the functions of the Community of Learning leadership role the teacher shall receive an allowance as per 3.16 (a) to 3.16 (c) above. e. Where the teacher is not undertaking the whole of the principal’s role, the allowance will be pro-rated based on the proportion of the role undertaken by the teacher. Where more than one teacher is undertaking the principal’s role, the allowance shall be pro-rated provided that the total allowance paid in combination, does not exceed the amount payable if a single teacher was acting in the role.
